dqman Posted February 12, 2007 Report Posted February 12, 2007 Wow...I wish I had known about this site last year when I was in Boston!I am traveling to NYC May 3-10. I want a 4-5* hotel in any of the midtwon areas. I'm open to spend up to $300+. Any suggestions on how to bid to be successful is apprecaited. I wonder...is it any more difficult to make a successful bid when staying for a longer stay (10 nights in my case)? Thanks for all your help!
thereuare Posted February 12, 2007 Report Posted February 12, 2007 Welcome to BetterBidding... we're glad you found us too! :)I'm assuming your dates are 5/3-5/13 (you post above indicates 5/3-5/10) and i think your maximum bid is too high. Before bidding, do any of these work for you (and if so, you can keep them 'knowing' what you're getting or try to beat them on Priceline):Beekman Tower 1BR suite for $159/nite (good reviews)Eastgater Tower Studio Suite for $168/nite (even better reviews and a little better location)Both have a full kitchen (well, 'full kitchen' by NYC standards :) ) with refrigerator which could prove to be convenient for a 10 nite stay.Let us know your thoughts on the above. dqman Posted February 13, 2007 Author Report Posted February 13, 2007 Yes...the dates are 5-3 to 5-13. I was so darn excited to find this place I mistakenly typed the wrong dates.thereuare, I checked out the 2 places you recommended. My wife and I are wanting to stay at a more upscale place. 4* is preferred.Any suggestions for Priceline or the other off record sites are appreciated.
thereuare Posted February 13, 2007 Report Posted February 13, 2007 If you want to spend the money the Affinia Dumont can be had for $289/nite and is the third highest ranked hotel in NYC (fwiw). If you want to bid this you have two re-bid zones when bidding 4* in NYC. If you're not familiar with re-bidding please read Priceline Re-Bidding Explained and feel free to ask questions and/or confirm your re-bid zones with the board before proceeding.Select 4* MTW...Bid $120, if rejected add re-bid zone...Bid $130, if rejected add re-bid zone...Bid $140, if rejected close browser and re-access priceline however you did previously.Select 4* MTE...Bid $120, if rejected add re-bid zone...Bid $130, if rejected add re-bid zone...Bid $140, if rejected close browser and re-access priceline however you did previously.Select 4* UM/CPS...Bid $120, if rejected add re-bid zone...Bid $130, if rejected add re-bid zone...Bid $140, if rejected close browser and re-access priceline however you did previously.Select 4* MTS...Bid $120, if rejected add re-bid zone...Bid $130, if rejected add re-bid zone...Bid $140, if rejected close browser and re-access priceline however you did previously.Select 4* MTW and MTE...Bid $150, if rejected add re-bid zone...Bid $155, if rejected add re-bid zone...Bid $160, if rejected close browser and re-access priceline however you did previously.Select 4* UM/CPS and MTS...Bid $150, if rejected add re-bid zone...Bid $155, if rejected add re-bid zone...Bid $160, if rejected close browser and re-access priceline however you did previously.Select 4* MTW and UM/CPS...Bid $165, if rejected add re-bid zone...Bid $170, if rejected add re-bid zone...Bid $175, if rejected close browser and re-access priceline however you did previously.Select 4* MTE and MTS...Bid $165, if rejected add re-bid zone...Bid $170, if rejected add re-bid zone...Bid $175, if rejected close browser and re-access priceline however you did previously.Select 4* MTW and MTS...Bid $180, if rejected add re-bid zone...Bid $185, if rejected add re-bid zone...Bid $190, if rejected close browser and re-access priceline however you did previously.Select 4* MTE and UM/CPS...Bid $180, if rejected add re-bid zone...Bid $185, if rejected add re-bid zone...Bid $190, if rejected close browser and re-access priceline however you did previously.Select 4* MTW and MTE and UM/CPS...Bid $195, if rejected add re-bid zone...Bid $200, if rejected add re-bid zone...Bid $205, if rejected close browser and re-access priceline however you did previously.Select 4* MTW and MTE and MTS...Bid $195, if rejected add re-bid zone...Bid $200, if rejected add re-bid zone...Bid $205, if rejected close browser and re-access priceline however you did previously.Select 4* MTW and UM/CPS and MTS...Bid $210, if rejected add re-bid zone...Bid $215, if rejected add re-bid zone...Bid $220, if rejected close browser and re-access priceline however you did previously.Select 4* MTE and UM/CPS and MTS...Bid $210, if rejected add re-bid zone...Bid $215, if rejected add re-bid zone...Bid $220, if rejected close browser and re-access priceline however you did previously.Select 4* MTE and MTW and UM/CPS and MTS...Bid $225, if rejected add re-bid zone...Bid $230, if rejected add re-bid zone...Bid $235.I would start with the above. dqman Posted February 13, 2007 Author Report Posted February 13, 2007 I have a few questions about the way I should bid...I tried to bid the way you suggested and I want to make sure I have this right...1. Bid MTW 4* 1202. Bid ""+MTE 3. Bid ""+UM/CPS4. Bid "" +MTSClose browser and do above at $130 & 140I find that I get an error "duplicate request" when hitting the $140 markAm I doing something wrong?
thereuare Posted February 14, 2007 Report Posted February 14, 2007 Am I doing something wrong?MTE, MTW, UM/CPS, and MTS are your 'live' zones... not your re-bid zones.See Priceline Re-Bidding Explained and ask any questions and/or confirm your re-bid zones with the board. dqman Posted February 14, 2007 Author Report Posted February 14, 2007 I finally figured it out. :) I didn't have any luck with my bids. I went through savingsbarn to get to priceline.
thereuare Posted February 14, 2007 Report Posted February 14, 2007 Did you book the Affinia Dumont (or something else) as a back-up?Do you want to stick with the above strategy for awhile or do you want to raise your bid towards your maximum on the next round of bidding? dqman Posted February 14, 2007 Author Report Posted February 14, 2007 I am changing my dates to 5-7-07 to 5-13-07 for a total of 6 nights. I decided to start my trip in D.C. 5-3 to 5-7. I posted in the D.C. forum for help there. I haven't booked anything yet. I have time.To increase my bids...should I use the same strategy as outlined in your post while adjusting the dollar amounts by $30-$40?
thereuare Posted February 14, 2007 Report Posted February 14, 2007 You have time... but what if rates go up between now and then? This is why we recommend a cancellable back-up... you protect yourself in case rates go up, but you are also eligible to take advantage of any ohter deals that come along. Having a cancellable back-up also puts your bid amounts into perspective.I wouldn't typically just increase each bid by a flat $xx dollars... it is dependent upon how much time has elapsed since your previous bidding attempt. dqman Posted February 16, 2007 Author Report Posted February 16, 2007 I wanted to report in on my success.Using the bid format outlined above and rasing my prices by $20 each bid I ended up with a successful bid of $260 for May 7th through May 13th at Morgans. We expected to spend well over $400/night for a 4* room in this location. We are thrilled! I know we could have saved even more money if I had been patient...but I'm not! Just knowing that we have a room that we are happy with is worth a few bucks more! This savings along with the fabulous deal we got at the Embassy Row Westin in D.C., we saved over $1500. :) Thank you to everyone that makes this site possible...especially the contributions of thereuare.
