azzy Posted January 28, 2007 Report Posted January 28, 2007 4 star Priceline31/2 Expedia3 AAANew York CityHilton Times SquareFebruary 2, one night$115 plus $27.47 tax, total $142.47stared at $108.Booked 1/25/2007I was surprised to find out the star rating is different with each travel web site.So what is the difference between a 3 star and 4 star in New York?I stayed at the other Hilton on Avenue of Americas and was very unhappy with the attitude. It is really just a fancy Convention spot. So far this hotel appears to be under MUCH better management.I was unhappy that I could not use the fitness center without a charge (my Hilton Honors level was not up to the gold standard or something like that). When the Manager looked up my reservation he had a superior attitude. I had the same complaint at the Hyatt, Washington, D.C. with the gold membership but the Manager waived the fee when I complained. They charge for early check in, late check out, internet, holding the bags etc. and the Hilton Times Squareis free.So I guess my comment or complaint would be, if the hotels are gaining stars for the pool or fitness center it should be available free.I believe the star level should be done by an impartial panel and was surprised to find out for examplePriceline makes the rules on the level.I was happy with my last visit at the Grand Hyatt and if using the Metro North this is a great choice.
thereuare Posted January 28, 2007 Report Posted January 28, 2007 Thank you for sharing your win with the board. There are plenty of amenities that are 'advertised' but there is an additional fee for (hi-speed internet being the most common). Although i'm not happy that more and more hotels are beginning to charge for use of the fitness center, it's better than charing a mandatory 'resort fee' which incluses use of the fitness center (and whatever other amenities you may or may not end up using). The only problem i would really have is if the hotel charged their 'opaque' customers a fee for using an amenity that they didn't charge their 'traditionally booked' guests.Enjoy your stay.
