etphonehome Posted November 28, 2006 Report Posted November 28, 2006 Hi!My husband and I and another couple will be going to New York City for a week in June. It's our first time there, so are not that knowledgeable about the neighborhoods. We plan on doing all of the "usual" sightseeing. We are not too picky about our hotel since we won't be there much. A 2.5 or even a 2 would be okay if it was nice. We would like to be close to the subway or other transportation, since we will not have a car. Can you give us any advice. Would appreciate any info about cheap flights as well. Thank you so much!etphonehome
blindman Posted November 28, 2006 Report Posted November 28, 2006 If you could add a bit more detail then advice would be better aimed.1) What's your budget?2) What are your arrival\departure dates?3) I Assume you want two rooms each for two people.4) Where are you flying from and to which airport and are the flights booked.5) Would you mind staying in New Jersey (across from Manhattan).Look at the MAPS to get and idea of hotels won and reviews.Generally with PL the best value hotels (bigger savings) tend to be the 3* or 4*, but of course this can vary from place to place.(Usually) the best value in New York, is in fact in New Jersey and is the Hyatt, which is a 3*.The nearby Candlewood suites is a 2* and is still Ok.
thereuare Posted November 28, 2006 Report Posted November 28, 2006 As blindman points out, we'll need a bit more info in order to advise. For hotel advice:What are the actual dates of your stay and expected budget? For airfare:Dates of travel? Where are you flying from? What is the best rate you've found so far? Please use this HOTWIRE and these PRICELINE LINKS: HOTELS, CAR RENTALS, and AIRFARE to begin your travel purchases
etphonehome Posted November 28, 2006 Author Report Posted November 28, 2006 If you could add a bit more detail then advice would be better aimed.1) What's your budget? As cheap as we can get it. We'd love for it to be around $100, but know that's a pipe dream. We also would be happy to stay outside of the city, if we could get around without a car easily.2) What are your arrival\departure dates? We are looking at June 14-21st, so I am just in the early stages of searching. 3) I Assume you want two rooms each for two people. Yes.4) Where are you flying from and to which airport and are the flights booked. Dallas Fort Worth. We have not booked airfare yet. I've been looking at packages even on Priceline and found a fare for $828 a person, including airfare and hotel. The hotel was somewhere downtown. Also, is it generally cheaper to fly into JFK or LGA, or doesn't it matter?5) Would you mind staying in New Jersey (across from Manhattan). See #1.Look at the MAPS to get and idea of hotels won and reviews. Generally with PL the best value hotels (bigger savings) tend to be the 3* or 4*, but of course this can vary from place to place.(Usually) the best value in New York, is in fact in New Jersey and is the Hyatt, which is a 3*.The nearby Candlewood suites is a 2* and is still Ok.Thank you for your help! I am definitely a beginner with all of this, but eager to learn
thereuare Posted November 29, 2006 Report Posted November 29, 2006 What appears to be the Candlewood Suites is available thru HOTWIRE for just $99/nite for your nites. If budget is a primary concern i think this is good deal... NYC will undoubtedly cost you more, although you may be able to get a 3* directly in the city for $20-$30 more per nite. This area is convenient to NYC transportation and you can easily get around without a car... but you do lose some of the "nyc feel" you would get from staying directly in the city.If your budget is very tight i would have no problem recommending the above, but if you're willing to SPLITTING YOUR PRICELINE BID, then i would consider spending more and starying directly in the city for part of your stay and then taking the above for the other part of your stay... at least giving you a little taste of staying directly in the city, but also saving money on other nites so that you aren't too budget concious when going out in the city. You can use our Airfare Rate Checker to easily check rates from a variety of sources... use "NYC" for the arrival airport in order to check all three major airports (EWR and LGA are better options than JFK).
