Priceline Hotel: Need Help - 11/8-11/11/2006

Hi. I have been doing my best to take the info from this board to use in my priceline bidding. I am not doing so hot, but I am still trying low prices. I have tried the following areas, star ratings, and prices:

MTW, MTE, UM-CPS, MTS 4, 3, 2.5, even 2* at prices ranging 105 to 125.

I know i need to go up now. I think I started more hopeful than I should because I saw the Hudson go for 105 on 11/22 - which I assumed was in more demand than my dates: 11/8-11/11

I also have seen on the regular priceline listings that there are 2 star rooms in midtown area - published prices around 240-250.

I know I did a bad job (mainly guessing price) and I expect you will tell me so :) And I am humble and hoping for help. It is myself and a friend... Location is more important than star rating but money is slightly more important than location. I really dont know how much more than 150 per night (before taxes) we can go but understand that it may be a must.

p.s. would consider any safe area in manhattan with easy/close subway access

Thanks

Alicia (& Melissa)

are there recommended 2* hotels near Times Square?
Not that i would recommned :) Remember, you are buying an opaque hotel, so even if some of the 2* hotels were considered acceptable, you can't pick them and exclude the ones you may not want. I'm sure the 2* hotels don't sit vacant each nite, so somebody is staying there, but i wouldn't recommend a 2* property in NYC.

You could stay at some pretty good hotels in Jersey City, which provides easy 24/7 access to Manhattan in 10-15 minutes via PATH train, but late at nite (11pm-6am) it only runs every half hour, so not sure if that is an option if you intend on staying out until all hours of the morning.

Would Jersey City work... or would you rather roll the dice on a 2 star?

I have consulted with my friend and we are ok with gambling on the 2* We are really hoping for a good location - and not being inside the hotel much. I will gladly try for 3* first but really need to keep rate 150 or lower. We are also willing to split bid if necessary.

So which zone(s) are acceptable to you... the four which you have bid above? When was the last time you bid those zones (and rejected up to $125?)

Is $150 your maximum bid or your "all in" price... if "all-in", what is your maximum bid amount?

Before I go any farther - on the add re-bid zone...I understand the process but how do I know the star levels in a certain area? I am starting with 3* so I dont know which re-bid zone would apply. Or do I just pick a zone. I read the re-bid topic but I was unclear on that particular part (how do i know the re-bid zone for 3*?). Thanks.

From the first post of Priceline Re-Bidding Explained:

The way to check what star levels are available in each zone is to open a Priceline page, check ONLY the zone you are inquiring about, and then proceed to the next page (as if you were going to select a zone)... this will give you the available star ratings in that area. You can then hit BACK on your browser, uncheck the current box, check the next box, and repeat the process. It is important to do this before EACH attempt at adding a zone that you really don't want, as new hotels can be added and the star ratings can change at any time. (NOTE: for most users Priceline has updated their interface making the above process easier... simply check a zone and note the highest star rating available within each zone, UNcheck that zone and checkmark the next zone, repeating the process)
Feel free to confirm your re-bid zone with the board before proceeding.

Hi. I used the entire bidding strategy that you provided, but all were rejected :)

Can I try this same strategy daily? Or is it likely that I am out of luck for that area/price? I know this time of year is tough.

Thanks for your help,

Alicia

You can try every 24 hours... but i would certainly come up with some sort of fallback strategy.

Unfortunately you can't use HOTWIRE /jersey city as a back-up because by the time you decide you want that offer it may no longer be available, but imo that may be your best bet at this point given your maximum bid.

Thanks. We will be figuring out a backup strategy. Anywhere in Manhattan that is safe & clean would be ok if close to transportation. The price issue may remain the same though. We are also willing to split bid if necessary. If these options dont help then we will proceed with backup plan soon.

Thanks,

I think we are going to give up on the Midtown search and go with the airport.. We are flying into LGA. I see that priceline has 3 - 3star hotels listed. Do these hotels have easy transportation into city? Are we near train? I guess I need to know if we have to take cab to other transportation...or will there be easy access back and forth (other than cabs).

I found an apartment rental near times square but I dont want to get ripped off. $150 per night.

Can you elaborate please? I do not have a clue about NYC so I will accept any/all advice. After failed bids we decided to try for 2 nights in midtown followed by night stay at LGA. Our goal is to get back and forth easily and at a reasonable cost (dont want to spend money we saved by staying out of manhattan). We will be attending the Cornell/Columbia game on Saturday (last day) at 12:30 and will need to get back to hotel for bags & make it to airport for 7:44 flight. Thanks for all your help in this....I know this is taking a while to resolve but I really do appreciate it.

Before we put the cart in front of the horse, have you yet tried for the two nite stay in Manhattan, as per:

You can repeat the above strategy for 11/9-11/11 and 11/8-11/10 to see if it helps any

You need to get the two nites in Manhattan first and then you can figure out your options for the remaining nite (LGA or Jersey City) since you can't (or shouldn't) bid the sole nite before securing your two nite stay.

I apologize to those of you who have been following the thread. I have been unsuccessful, so far, as you may have guessed. I have used the strategy provided in this thread and have also split the bid and increased to 160 per night. I have found hotels/apartments at prices that were "cheap" but they seem very sketchy. I am continuing to try. This is a great process, just a difficult time. Keep the faith! I'll do better and post soon.

After a few more failed attempts, we decided to take the gamble on an apartment. The price was good but definitley would have preferred reliable hotel. It is in midtown so I am happy with that at least. Good luck to you all. I will look to this board in the future for trips to come.
