martysutton Posted September 28, 2006 Report Posted September 28, 2006 I am taking my wife to NYC for the first time, and I would like to stay in a hotel near shopping and time square. We plan to stay 2 nights sometime around the 3rd week of October. What are good hotels in this area (4* - Waldorf...)?What are the most common 4* hotels in this area, and what are the general winning PL bids?Is it better to go over a weekend or during the week? If during the week, early in the week, or later in the week. Thanks in advance,Marty
thereuare Posted September 28, 2006 Report Posted September 28, 2006 Generally speaking, weekends are less expensive than mid-week (and Sunday nites are typically the least expensive of all). However, rates are date specific, so you'll need to firm up your plans a bit before we're able to offer much more insight and/or any specific adivce. martysutton Posted September 28, 2006 Author Report Posted September 28, 2006 We are headed up on oct 17th, and back on the 19th.
martysutton Posted September 29, 2006 Author Report Posted September 29, 2006 My wife and I will be travelling to NYC on Oct 15th, and staying till the 19th. I am looking for a hotel in the MTE or MTW area for around $150. Is a 4* possible, or will I need to go higher? I can change hotels on the 17th or 18th if it helps. Also, do you recommend a show this time of year?
thereuare Posted September 29, 2006 Report Posted September 29, 2006 Please keep all posts for the same stay in the same thread.I suspect that it will take more than $150, and i'd also recommend including more nearby zones as it will 1) increase the number of re-bid zones you have, 2) open up the 'pool' of hotels willing to accept your bid and 3) location isn't that important in Manhattan (as long as you're in midtown) as mass transit is cheap and readily accessibleIf these are the only two zones you're willing to accept you can try as follows:You have two re-bid zones avaiablle when bidding 4* in NYC. If you're not familiar with re-bidding please read Priceline Re-Bidding Explained and feel free to ask questions and/or confirm your re-bid zones with the board before proceeding.Select 4* MTW...Bid $120, if rejected add re-bid zone...Bid $130, if rejected add re-bid zone...Bid $135, if rejected close browser and re-access priceline however you did previously.Select 4* MTE...Bid $120, if rejected add re-bid zone...Bid $130, if rejected add re-bid zone...Bid $135, if rejected close browser and re-access priceline however you did previously.Select 4* MTW and MTE...Bid $140, if rejected add re-bid zone...Bid $145, if rejected add re-bid zone...Bid $150.You can try the above for your complete stay. If rejected, you can then start all over for the following date combinations:10/15-10/1810/15-10/17Any questions feel free to ask.Good Luck and let us kno how it goes (or if you're willing to include other nearby areas) Please use this HOTWIRE and these PRICELINE LINKS: HOTELS, CAR RENTALS, and AIRFARE to begin your travel purchases
martysutton Posted September 29, 2006 Author Report Posted September 29, 2006 Thanks for the info.what nearby areas would you suggest?
thereuare Posted September 29, 2006 Report Posted September 29, 2006 Definately UM/CPS and possibly MTS. Please use this HOTWIRE and these PRICELINE LINKS: HOTELS, CAR RENTALS, and AIRFARE to begin your travel purchases
martysutton Posted September 29, 2006 Author Report Posted September 29, 2006 I'm up to $210 in MTW, MTE, and UCP. Do I just keep going up? Or should I expect something close to that in the MTS area?
thereuare Posted September 30, 2006 Report Posted September 30, 2006 Do you have a back-up reservation? (if so, where and how much) Please use this HOTWIRE and these PRICELINE LINKS: HOTELS, CAR RENTALS, and AIRFARE to begin your travel purchases
martysutton Posted September 30, 2006 Author Report Posted September 30, 2006 No. I have no backup reservation.Should I drop down to 3*? if so, how much should I go down?Should I try Hotwire? THey have a 3.5* for $234 with Fitness, Resturant, Pool, Internet. Any idea which one this is.Thanks
thereuare Posted September 30, 2006 Report Posted September 30, 2006 It is a personal decision whether you should raise your bid or lower your star rating or add MTS... based upon what type of hotels your accustomed to staying in, your budget, etc.I assume you have been bidding for the complete stay as well as the subset of dates? What zone is the HOTWIRE hotel you mention above?Let us know the above and we'll try to help on both counts. martysutton Posted October 1, 2006 Author Report Posted October 1, 2006 Please help me to identify a Hotwire 3* in Midtown Central NYC with the following amenitiesHigh Speed InternetPoolResturantsFitness centerThis is a 3.5* on Tripadvisor
thereuare Posted October 1, 2006 Report Posted October 1, 2006 Please keep all posts for the same stay in the same thread.(2nd time!)As this is the Priceline section of the board, if you ultimately use HOTWIRE we'll simply move the entire thread to that section of the board. So is the above hotel rated 3* or 3.5* by HOTWIRE? Please use this HOTWIRE and these PRICELINE LINKS: HOTELS, CAR RENTALS, and AIRFARE to begin your travel purchases
martysutton Posted October 1, 2006 Author Report Posted October 1, 2006 It's a 3* on Hotwire for $234/night for the entire staySorry, since I was talking about hotwire, I thought I should put the post there.I'll keep the post together.
thereuare Posted October 1, 2006 Report Posted October 1, 2006 The Hotwire hotel matches what is currently being seen for the Holiday Inn Midtown (57th St) so that would be our best guess. Please use this HOTWIRE link to begin any purchases you make.Do you want to go with the above or continue to try to bid on Priceline? martysutton Posted October 1, 2006 Author Report Posted October 1, 2006 I think I would rather keep trying priceline. I'm already up to $240 for 4* and $200 for 3* In MTE, MTW, MTS, and UCP. I have also tried up to $225 for a 3* in MTE, MTW, UCP.I may end up having to take the $235 Holiday Inn. Do you think It's a decent hotel, or should I keep going up to $240 for the 3* in MTE, W, CP on priceline. Or should I go higher than the $175 i've tried adding MTS to the 3*? If the 3*'s in MTS are fairly close to midtown (north of penn station) then I might consider going higher there. What do you think?
thereuare Posted October 1, 2006 Report Posted October 1, 2006 Assuming we're correct on the ID of the HOTWIRE hotel, it's about a $30/nite savings over the hotel direct rate... 15% isn't a great savings, but it is $100 after four nites which can certainly buy you dinner one nite in Manhattan and the reviews are decent.I wouldn't bid higher than $234 on Priceline for a 3* because you could just as easily get the same hotel as HOTWIRE is offering above but pay for it than you need to.When you select the MTS zone you agree to a hotel anywhere in the zone, so if you only want to be north of Penn Station then it is not a good idea to be bidding this area. At the 3* level i tend to favor the hotels in the MTE, MTW, and UM/CPS zone than the 3* properties in the MTS zone.It really depends upon how much you're willing to stretch your budget... once you start hitting the mid-$200's it becomes hard (for me at least) to swallow spending that much on a hotel room, but obviously the hotels are getting these prices (and then some!) martysutton Posted October 2, 2006 Author Report Posted October 2, 2006 I'm up pretty high now on priceline with no luck. How do you feel about the Clarion on 5th ave? I have a friend who works for them and may be able to get me a good rate. Is this hotel comperable to the Holiday inn? How about the neighborhood?
thereuare Posted October 2, 2006 Report Posted October 2, 2006 Generally speaking a Holiday Inn is a higher rated than a Clarion, but it all depends upon the rate you can get. Please use this HOTWIRE and these PRICELINE LINKS: HOTELS, CAR RENTALS, and AIRFARE to begin your travel purchases
martysutton Posted October 3, 2006 Author Report Posted October 3, 2006 The comfort hookup is not looking good. Any idea what a 2.5 central park area hotwire with fitness, breakfast, and business ctr is?
thereuare Posted October 3, 2006 Report Posted October 3, 2006 Is the above HOTWIRE hotel still appearing for a search on 10/15-10/19? I just did a HOTWIRE search and dont' show any 2.5* hotel in the Central Park Area for your dates. martysutton Posted October 3, 2006 Author Report Posted October 3, 2006 Yes, it's the first one that comes up.
thereuare Posted October 3, 2006 Report Posted October 3, 2006 I see it now... and it is a match for the Comfort Inn Central Park West so that would be our best guess. Please use this HOTWIRE link to begin any purchases.Let us know what you decide or if we can assist further. martysutton Posted October 3, 2006 Author Report Posted October 3, 2006 I used the PRICELINE link, and got the Novotel for $235/night.Little more than I wanted to pay, but it is the busy season and I wanted 4 mid-week nights. I think I will be happier with this one than the Comfort or the Holiday Inn.Thank you for your help.
