I tried bidding 2 days ago for these dates, all the way up to $180, but no luck.

Attempted bidding today

3*; MTW, MTE; $140 : rejected

Rebid

3*; MTW, MTE, and added UWS; $150 : Accepted

Upgraded to 4* Hilton New York.

From reading other winning bids in NYC, seems the hotels don't release their room until a week or so before.

We have seen NYC hotels release rooms/inventory closer to checkin date lately, but i suspect that this is only a temporary situation which will subside once the "busy season" ends... can't fault them for holding onto rooms that they think they can sell themselves for more than they could get thru the opaque suppliers. It is highly recommended that users book a cancellable back-up (use our BetterChecker Tool and the links in our support page) if they choose to wait until last minute to do their bidding, for although some users have had success waiting, others have been 'shut-out' as no additional inventory was released for their own dates.

barryj, regarding the upgrade... the star rating you select is the minimum you are willing to accept. Priceline will always check for higher star rated hotels to accept your bid first.

When you bid on a star level in PL this is the minimum rating that PL will let you accept.

If Pl 'finds' a higher star rating for the price you name it will upgrade you automatically.

This can be an advantage (as here) but can be a disadvantage when 'upgraded' from 2.5* to 3*.

It is something to be aware of as you need to plan for this outcome and its consequences
