Priceline Hotel: new york

Thank you in advance to everyone who helps out on this site.

Nothing makes a vacation more fun then feeling like you are getting a deal. that said, my wife and i are going to new york city 9/20/06 to 9/24/06. neither of us have been before and are hoping to do all of the tourist activities: shows, museums, restaurants, night life, etc. we had no idea how expensive hotels were. even using priceline and other search websites hotel prices are outrageous. we were hoping to stay in a sweet hotel (3 stars or better) for less than 200 a night. it appears this is a rediculous fantasy. we were hoping someone might be able to give us some tips on hotels.

Rates are very high for the above stay.

Is SPLITTING YOUR PRICELINE BID an option as i think that then makes things much more reasonable for at least part of your stay (i'll try researching the other part once i know if this is an option or not).
