flash Posted July 29, 2006 Report Posted July 29, 2006 I'm trying to find a deal, but at an "anniversary quality" hotel in New York City for October 13 - 15. I've read the recommended strategies, and am ready to give it a try tonight.I would prefer the Midtown/Central Park South area, but am also fine with MTE, MTW, CPE or CPW.I'd like to end up with a 4 stars hotel, and really just want a good discount over the prevailing $350 to $400 rates. If I could get 4 stars for $200 to $250 I'd be happy.October seems to be a popular time in NYC. Am I starting too early? Does anyone have other suggestions that could help me?Thanks in advance for any assistance!
thereuare Posted July 30, 2006 Report Posted July 30, 2006 ....also fine with MTE, MTW, CPE or CPWDo you mean UES and UWS? There are no 4* hotels in either of these zones. Are you familiar with Priceline Re-Bidding Explained? In regards to when to bid, see the related link in our PRICELINE FAQ.Please clarify regarding the zones above and if you are ready to bid now and we will suggest a strategy for you to follow. flash Posted July 30, 2006 Author Report Posted July 30, 2006 Sorry. I didn't have Priceline up when I wrote my post. I couldn't remember all the area name abbreviations. I also didn't realize ther weren't 4 star hotels in the Upper East Side and the Upper West Side.I've read the Priceline FAQs about when to book, but thought that perhaps you had some more specific advice about October - whether it is just a peak time for hotels in NYC or not. I'm also familiar now with your advice about re-bidding.I'd rather be in Upper Midtown - Central Park South, Midtown West, Midtown East or Midtown South (in rough order) in a 4 star hotel. I'm ready to bid now. Thanks for your help.

flash Posted July 30, 2006 Author Report Posted July 30, 2006 :) I went through the entire process today, bidding up to $245 for a 4 star hotel in any area - UM/CPS, MTE, MTW and MTS, and Priceline rejected every bid. I then added SoHo / Financial district (not my preference at all) and went up to about $180 there - no luck.Unless anyone has another suggestion, I'll make a refundable reservation and try Priceline again in 4 to 6 weeks. Thanks for the help anyway!
thereuare Posted July 30, 2006 Report Posted July 30, 2006 Please consider the links from our support page for your back-up reservation.HOTWIRE does have a 4* hotel in the MTE zone at ~$272/nite, just beyond your maximum bid amount, believed to be the W New York. flash Posted July 31, 2006 Author Report Posted July 31, 2006 I'm a Government employee, so I am able to get the Government rate on leisure travel at many hotels. I booked at the Grand Hyatt at $266, and also at the Barclay at $282 last night. I'll cancel one of them today and keep the other until closer to the trip.I'll give Priceline another try then. Your website has been very helpful! Thanks.

I have a "safe" reservation at the Barclay for about $280 per night, but today I found this on Hotwire:Neighborhood Name 1: 4-star hotel in Downtown - SoHo This upscale establishment offers thoughtful features, quality rooms and a high level of service. flash Posted October 13, 2006 Author Report Posted October 13, 2006 Thanks for the information, and for correcting my post. Unfortunately I didn't have time to book the Hilton at work today and now I would be charged for one night's stay at the Barclay if I cancelled. This is a great site though. I'll definitely use it in the future!
