Issis Posted July 25, 2006 Report Posted July 25, 2006 hi, new here! :) i've used Hotwire for a long time, and never used Priceline. i have a question: :) where do i bid for hotels on Priceline? and how? does it work like Ebay? is it the same as their *name your own price*?thanks a lot!!! :o
thereuare Posted July 25, 2006 Report Posted July 25, 2006 "Bidding" is the same as "Name Your Own Priceline".If you'd like help with an upcoming stay please post in the state category of your destination.Thanks. Issis Posted July 27, 2006 Author Report Posted July 27, 2006 hi, i'm looking for a hotel room for 9/2-9/5 in NYC, preferrable MTW, MTS, UP-MT, and UP-West, 3 stars.i've never been to NY. but heard it's very tough travelling by car. so i'd like to stay close to everything.any suggestions where i should start? any help is apprieciated!!! :) and... also, a newbie question: i heard about the 24-hr rebid rule on priceline... i'm wondering... why can't ppl just start a new bid and forget about the one that's been rejected? :)
thereuare Posted July 27, 2006 Report Posted July 27, 2006 What is your maximum bid? We wouldn't want to suggest a strategy that was more than you wanted to spend.Priceline won't allow you to make the same exactly bid again, to avoid users bidding $1, $2, $3, $4, etc, etc until they are accepted. If you try to make the same exact bid as you did previously (inside of 24 hours) you'll get a "duplicate message" screen and they won't even try to see if they can match a hotel to your bid amount. Issis Posted July 28, 2006 Author Report Posted July 28, 2006 thanks~ thereuare!!! :) :) :o i really dunno the market. i'm aiming for something under $150, the cheaper the better of course~, but i'm open to suggestions! and also... do they charge more if i have 3 ppl in one room? thanks a lot!!! :)
thereuare Posted July 28, 2006 Report Posted July 28, 2006 Well before bidding i'd suggest reading the occupancy related link in our PRICELINE FAQ... trying for more than double occupancy in NYC can be risky. HOTWIRE does allow you to search for up to quad occupancy. Please read the related link above and then ask questions or let us know which way you'd like to proceed. Issis Posted July 28, 2006 Author Report Posted July 28, 2006 yeah~ i know hotwire usually let you slip w/3 ppl. i booked a couple of hotels last month for an upcoming trip next month, and hotwire didn't raise their price at all. i reckon NYC might be different though... but i agree with someone said in one of the FAQs you mentioned, i can just check in by myself. i would start bidding soon. do i start ar savingsbarn? i looked at the website earlier, it directed me to priceline. what's the difference between bidding directly on priceline and on savingsbarn? thanks again!!!
thereuare Posted July 28, 2006 Report Posted July 28, 2006 Note that in NYC it's more than just "i'll only go to the check-in desk by myself" as rooms are notoriously small, and there are quite a few hotels that only have one bed in the room and no space for a roll-away. We'll suggest a strategy for whatever you want to do, but you should be aware of the risk in doing so.Also, if you could get a 4* for within your budget would you want to try for that first, or are you simply looking for the least expensive 3* or above?Let us know the above and if you still want to go the priceline route, we'll then advise for whichever direction you want to go.Are you ready to bid/purchase now? Issis Posted July 28, 2006 Author Report Posted July 28, 2006 if i can get a 4* within my budget, i'll go for it of course!!!and yes, i'm ready to start bidding now! :)
thereuare Posted July 28, 2006 Report Posted July 28, 2006 One last question as i review this thread and see your zones:MTW, MTS, UP-MT, and UP-WestIs there a reason you're avoiding the MTE zone? Should we include that area in a bidding strategy? Please use this HOTWIRE and these PRICELINE LINKS: HOTELS, CAR RENTALS, and AIRFARE to begin your travel purchases
Issis Posted July 28, 2006 Author Report Posted July 28, 2006 the reason i didn't choose MTE is: from the map, it doesn't seem to have many attractions in the area. i have to consider walking distance because one of us cannot walk very long. :)but i will consider it as the last choice.
thereuare Posted July 28, 2006 Report Posted July 28, 2006 It's up to you, as you know your group better than i do, but generally speaking MTE is very convenient (and, imo, more convenient than the MTS zone). For areas that are not walkable, subways, busses, and taxis are all readily available and very inexpensive. The most popular zones bid (in no particular order) are MTE, MTW, and UM/CPS... with MTS being a distant fourth after the other three. If you haven't seen it already give this thread a quick read: Priceline New York City ZonesLet us know what you decide and we'll suggest a strategy based upon your preferences. Issis Posted July 28, 2006 Author Report Posted July 28, 2006 thanks!now, i think my order of preference would be: Midtown West, Upper Midtown
thereuare Posted July 28, 2006 Report Posted July 28, 2006 I'm assuming that price is most important and then your zone preference (ie- you'd rather have a hotel in MTE for $110 than a hotel in MTW for $150?.... if this isn't correct don't bid the follow, we'll revise accordingly)When bidding 4* in NYC you have two re-bid zones available. If you're not familiar with re-bidding please read Priceline Re-Bidding Explained and feel free to ask questions and/or confirm your re-bid zones with the board before proceeding.Select 4* MTW...Bid $105, if rejected add re-bid zone...Bid $110, if rejected add re-bid zone...Bid $115, if rejected close browser and re-access priceline however you did previously.Select 4* UM/CPS...Bid $105, if rejected add re-bid zone...Bid $110, if rejected add re-bid zone...Bid $115, if rejected close browser and re-access priceline however you did previously.Select 4* MTS...Bid $105, if rejected add re-bid zone...Bid $110, if rejected add re-bid zone...Bid $115, if rejected close browser and re-access priceline however you did previously.Select 4* MTE...Bid $105, if rejected add re-bid zone...Bid $110, if rejected add re-bid zone...Bid $115, if rejected close browser and re-access priceline however you did previously.Select 4* MTW and UM/CPS...Bid $120, if rejected add re-bid zone...Bid $125, if rejected add re-bid zone...Bid $130, if rejected close browser and re-access priceline however you did previously.Select 4* MTS and MTE...Bid $120, if rejected add re-bid zone...Bid $125, if rejected add re-bid zone...Bid $130, if rejected close browser and re-access priceline however you did previously.Select 4* MTW and MTS...Bid $135, if rejected add re-bid zone...Bid $140, if rejected add re-bid zone...Bid $145, if rejected close browser and re-access priceline however you did previously.Select 4* UM/CPS and MTE...Bid $135, if rejected add re-bid zone...Bid $140, if rejected add re-bid zone...Bid $145, if rejected close browser and re-access priceline however you did previously.Select 4* MTE and MTW and UM/CPS and MTS...Bid $150.Any questions feel free to ask.Good Luck and let us know how it goes. controlyar Posted July 28, 2006 Report Posted July 28, 2006 Not to thread hi-jack but, if you are driving to Manhattan...is it recommended to park your vehicle in NJ someplace and then carry your luggage on the PATH system to the hotel? Or to take the NJ transit (320) to Port Authority/Times Square and cab/walk to the hotel.Does everyone just pay the ridiculous parking fees?My dilemma is this: Last bus is 1:00am for NJ Transit to Secaucus/Park Plaza and I am fairly sure some nights we may be in the city past 1:00am. I have also heard taxis do not like to cross the border but if they do, they double the fares! I imagine $80 will land a 3* (embassy, crown, holiday inn) or the 2.5* Amerisuites. But then if I stay out past 1:00am, I will be stranded!!! OR should I do this....land a 4* in Manhattan for $120 and pay $40 for parking ($25 if lucky). <---this is very expensive and double the price of the Secaucus hotel option. :o So, the question is....Can I leave my car in NJ someplace for free and get a lift to the hotel in Manhattan? Is this a wise decision? The main thing here is price as well as the 1:00am issue. Please help THEREUARE. :) Care to drive me & my party into Manhattan from Hoboken at a fee? :) j/k
Issis Posted July 28, 2006 Author Report Posted July 28, 2006 Select 4* MTE...Bid $105, if rejected add re-bid zone...Bid $110, if rejected add re-bid zone...Bid $115, if rejected close browser and re-access priceline however you did previously.tried this, no luck.i'll keep trying~ :)lol~ that's my delima too~ the reason why i didn't choose jersey city hotels. a friend just got $80/nite for hyatt regency on hudson... :)

Issis Posted September 6, 2006 Author Report Posted September 6, 2006 back from NYC. it's crazy!!! dunno why, but Hilton NY was over booked when i was checking in @ 10pm 9/2/06. they offered me 2 choices: we need to wait at least 2 hrs for a room, they'll pay for our dinner. OR, they send us to a hotel nearby for one night. they'll pay for the room, our round trip cab and refund us the first night cost @ Hilton. anyway~ it's a seriously crazy, but nice trip! :)
