Priceline Hotel: Please help with area to stay

Hi,

My family (me, my husband and 5-year old daughter) are driving from SF to SD for a cruise leaving on 4/7, and we were planning on driving on the 6th (Thursday), and staying in LA for one night. I don't know the area very well, so maybe someone can help with picking a good place to stay.

Since we are only staying one night, my requirements are not that high, just wanted a decent, safe area, reasonably priced (hoping for up to $60), maybe a place close a pedestrian area where we can go out to eat/walk in the evening. Santa Monica is a possibility in terms of the area, but from what I am seeing here, the prices are on the higher side.

What about Redondo Beach area - the hotels sound pretty good, are there place to go in the evening there?

Any advice is greatly appreciated, I'll be sure to post the final bid once we do get a place.
