Uwe Posted March 17, 2006 Report Posted March 17, 2006 Hi there,I tried bidding for our trip to D.C. from 08/10 - 08/24.I started with $45 for 2.5* Crystal City, rejected. $45 for 2.5* Alexandria, rejected. $45 for 2.5* WH/DT, rejected. $50 for CC/Alex, rejected. $50 for CC/WH, rejected. $51 for Alex/WH, counteroffer from Priceline that I should raise my bid by $14. I didn't. Changed the date by one day and bid $51 for 2.5* Alexandria, counteroffer from Priceline that I should raise my bid by $14.So it would be $65/night for 2 weeks. Not too bad. But Hotwire offers a 3* in Alexandria for $67/night for 2 weeks. And I'm almost sure that it's the Holiday Inn Historic District. So my guess is that Priceline upgrades to 3*. So which hotel will it probably be?Any suggestions? Should I accept or wait? Any comment is welcome.Thanks.
blindman Posted March 17, 2006 Report Posted March 17, 2006 If I read your post correctly you bid:-$45 for 2.5* Crystal City, rejectedThen started a fresh bid with Alexandria and bid the same amount??Then started a fresh bid with WH\DT and bid the same amount? If so WHY?I would have added each area and increased my bid :) Either way.1) I'd wait the 24 hrs and bid again, AFTER sorting out a proper strategy :o 2) The counter offer is usually twice what is needed to win so you could bid in $1 increments with all the areas you are happy with. My Guestimate is that $55 may be the magic number.3) You probably will be 'upgraded' Just make sure you're happy with this outcome. No idea which 3* it'll be :)
thereuare Posted March 18, 2006 Report Posted March 18, 2006 I think the OP bid the zones individually so that they could later use then in combination. If added a zone each time and raised the bid, could have overbid for the last zone added. Why do you think that Priceline is going to upgrade to 3*?I wouldn't accept their counter-offer as they can almost always be undercut.I would bid as follows on the next round of bidding...Select 2.5* Alexandria...Bid $53, if rejected add White House...Bid $55, if rejected close browser and re-access priceline however you did previously.Select 2.5* Alexandria and CC...Bid $57, if rejected add White House...Bid $59.Let us know how it goes. Uwe Posted March 18, 2006 Author Report Posted March 18, 2006 Thanks for the detailed strategy. But why do I have to start with 3*? I chose the 2.5* to get possibly a Residence Inn or Courtyard. What do you think? I'll wait for your answer before I start the next round.Thanks.Uwe
thereuare Posted March 18, 2006 Report Posted March 18, 2006 My mistake... just a habit as the majority on the board seek 3* or 4* hotels.I have editted accordingly. Please use this HOTWIRE and these PRICELINE LINKS: HOTELS, CAR RENTALS, and AIRFARE to begin your travel purchases
Uwe Posted March 18, 2006 Author Report Posted March 18, 2006 I started Alex with $53. Rejected. Added WH. Rejected. Everything as you suggested. At $55 counteroffer to raise my bid by $14. I declined. Went up to $59. Rejected. I could almost feel that it was quite close. :) Maybe I'm wrong but I will wait 72 hours to place my next bid. Then I'll do exactly the same but I'll start with $59.Any new suggestions? Thanks again.UweOf course I used the SB link.
thereuare Posted March 19, 2006 Report Posted March 19, 2006 You can now re-bid every 24 hours.... otherwise your plan sounds good. Thanks for using the SavingsBarn.com links to begin your bidding :) Please use this HOTWIRE and these PRICELINE LINKS: HOTELS, CAR RENTALS, and AIRFARE to begin your travel purchases
Uwe Posted March 20, 2006 Author Report Posted March 20, 2006 Hi,I have an offer for the Town Place Suites Chantilly for $74 per night via my company. Now I'm not sure what to do. I'm still discussing it with my wife. I'll keep you updated. Thanks again.Uwe
Uwe Posted March 21, 2006 Author Report Posted March 21, 2006 We decided to take the Town Place Suites in Chantilly. The hotel was renovated at the beginning of this year. It also has a small kitchen which is a big advantage because we travel with our children. :) Thanks again.Uwe
