I ended up booking:

 

Doubletree Times Square West for $77  1/10-1/11 on Hotwire

 

and 

 

Homewood Suites Midtown/Times Square for $82 1/11-1/13 minus better bidding discount on PRICELINE EXPRESS  deals

 

Homewood was listed as:

 

3.5* MSG-Convention area 

90% recommended

breakfast, pets, fitness, business, no smoking.
