Hello everyone,

First time user of this website, and only used Priceline a couple of years ago but was not happy with the deals found at all (but still stayed at the hotel - no choice!)

We're 2, visiting NYC for a few days in Jan on holidays.

Our criteria are:
- minimum 4 star hotel (with good reviews, there are some which get less than 4/5 on Tripadvisor ...)

- Manhattan (not lower Manhattan or above Central park though, but not very familiar with NYC neighborhoods inside Manhattan)

- budget below $150/night (no idea if that is even realistic)

We wanted to try our luck again at PRICELINE, do you think the above requirements are achievable?

Would be glad to hear any feedback!

Thanks in advance to all those who will read and help!

Welcome to Betterbidding.

Thankfully, your requirements are pretty easy, given the fact that January is one of the slowest periods of the year.

I'm seeing on PRICELINE EXPRESS (please confirm the correct dates of travel are showing on the detail page after clicking the link below.)

4.5* Madison Square Garden - Convention Area for $97
Business Center
Restaurant
Free Internet
Fitness Center
No Smoking Rooms/Facilities
>>>Best guess would be the Tryp Times Square South

4.5* Rockefeller Center - Bryant Park for $148
Pets Allowed
Business Center
Restaurant
Free Internet
Fitness Center
No Smoking Rooms/Facilities
>>>Omni Berkshire would be my best guess

4.5* Chelsea Area for $150
Restaurant
Indoor or Outdoor Pool
Fitness Center
No Smoking Rooms/Facilities
>>>Best guess would be Dream Downtown

4* Grand Central Terminal - UN for $89
Business Center
Restaurant
Fitness Center
No Smoking Rooms/Facilities
>>>In this case, best guess would be either the Club Quarters Grand Central or Hotel Boutique at Grand Central.

HOTWIRE:

4.5* HOTWIRE Chelsea for $133.00
Pet Friendly
Boutique
Shuttle
Smoke Free
Fitness
Restaurant
Business
Hi-Speed Internet
==>  Best guess would be the InnSide New York Nomad

4.5* HOTWIRE Empire State Building - Bryant Park for $111.00
Pet Friendly
Smoke Free
Fitness
Restaurant
Business
Laundry
==>  A guess here would be the Royalton

4.5* HOTWIRE Midtown East for $147.00
Pet Friendly
Smoke Free
Fitness
Restaurant
Business
Laundry
Hi-Speed Internet
Childrens Activities
Blind Accessible
Deaf Accessible
Travel Accessible
Room Accessible
Bathroom Accessible
Handicapped Parking
Roll-in Shower
==>  The Intercontinental Barclay has been seen with this amenity set previously, so that would be my best guess.

Would any of these possibilities be of interest?

Thank you Aaron, both for the welcome and the detailed answer!

I did not expect such detailed feedback so quickly, amazing!

With little experience both of NY and of these websites, do you think I could get a better deal via bidding (instead of using the express deal price)?
As this is the lowest period for NY, any chance prices will keep going down?

From the list you have sent me (thanks a lot for all the detail), the following ones seem very attractive (with rooms big enough to actually breathe in them - my first experience of priceline I ended up in a hotel where I could barely move around the bed):

Tryp Time Square South

Omni Berkshire

Innside New York Nomad

InterContinental Barclay

Thanks again for the great help, much appreciated!

You have to think about what is most important to you for this trip... bidding is usually slightly cheaper than taking a PRICELINE EXPRESS deal, but you then also lose the ability to take a guess as to which hotel it is that you may receive, know a minimum review rating of the hotel you will receive, nor be able to guarantee specific amenities.  So if you do go the bidding route, how do you ensure that the hotel you receive has at least a 4.0 or higher TA rating (which is one of the criteria you listed in your original post)?  As well, the price difference is usually not that much, and currently even less when using a coupon from the board's Priceline Coupon page.  We also have a Hotwire Coupon page if that is the route you decide to go as well.

The hotels that AaronJB listed above all fall within your $150 budget (per nite before taxes/fees) but also cover a very wide range of price ($89-$147).  Is the $89 hotel going to drop to $60... not very likely as there is a floor that hotels need to earn on a room in order for it to be profitable for them (it's a misconception by most that hotels would rather fill a room at any price to collect any amount or revenue rather than have the room sit empty... there is an overhead cost to put a guest in a room and at some point the hotel would rather the room sit empty).  Could the $147 room drop to $20-$30, sure it's possible, but what if that is the hotel you really want for this trip and instead of going down the price actually goes up (and then is now out of your budget)?

I found a deal on PRICELINE (using the PRICELINE links provided) for the "name your price" 5*:

160 USD for the Kimpton Hotel Eventi.

Thank you for your help !
