3.5 and higher star ratings

New York, Times Square, or something central to check out all of the sights, Central Park South...

October 26-30th

Traveling with my husband and two children 12 and 9

We are looking for something from $100-150, Amenities are not a huge deal for us, safe, clean, location and our own bathroom.  We are newbies to this sight and everything else.

Welcome to BetterBidding!

Not sure if your $100-$150 target is based upon room rate only or an all-in number, but either way at current rates it's probably not very realistic.  When searching HOTWIRE for your dates (and including 2adults/2children in the search) i see the following which are the closest in price to what your target:

4* HOTWIRE Lower East Side - East Village for $173.00
Free Internet
Smoke Free
Fitness
Restaurant
Business
Hi-Speed Internet
==> from the Hotwire Hotel List this matches previous reports for the Holiday Inn NYC - Lower East Side and this would be my best guess for this one

3.5* HOTWIRE Chelsea for $192.00
Free Internet
Fitness
Business
Hi-Speed Internet
Blind Accessible
Deaf Accessible
Travel Accessible
Room Accessible
Wheelchair Accessible
Bathroom Accessible
Roll-in Shower
==> best guess here would be the Hilton Garden Inn New York/Manhattan-Chelsea

Do you have any options that are closer to your expected budget?  Do either of the above work for your needs?

That is what I was thinking, We have not really come upon anything closer to our budget, but I did see we could bid on some rooms on Priceline that could be closer to our budget.  It says priceline only does double occupancy.  Can we bid on rooms there and ask the hotel to give us a room with two beds or is that not possible.

How convenient is Brooklyn downtown to get into the action, Priceline says that is the best deal there, worried it will be hard to and take a lot of time to get into the city as its not in the middle of everything.?

If you were to bid and win on NYOP or use PRICELINE EXPRESS for a listing that didn't have a bed option, you can request two beds either before the stay or at check-in, but in NYC where rooms are often small or very small (and rooms with more than one bed often go for a premium), there is a definite risk that the hotel will say no, or if they do say yes, they will charge an upgrade fee. It's much easier/more likely to be successful requesting two beds in some cities (Orlando, for example) than others (NYC.) Searching HOTWIRE for 2 adults and 2 children should result in some sort of bedding (2 beds, or 1 + rollaway or 1 + sofabed) for the entire party.

PRICELINE EXPRESS has a 4* for $176 in Brooklyn Downtown and a 3.5* for $165. Given the similarity of rates, there's no benefit as you have to think about the travel cost and time. If you're going to be in the Midtown area a lot, even thinking about the two listings higher up in the thread ($173 LES and the $193 Chelsea HOTWIRE listings), there's a benefit/value to being more centrally located in the Chelsea listing as you'd have to commute less if you are primarily going to be in Midtown.

Let us know your thoughts on the above and we can offer further suggestions.

Ok, so Priceline would not guarantee that we would have enough beds and would charge more, its unknown and I like to know what we are getting when with kids.

Hotwire, we would get the beds we need.  With our pricing needs we have thought about staying outside of the city, but would spend money and time commuting into the city.  We are flying into the Newark airport and have considered Jersey City or Hoboken, paying less for a room and commuting into the city,  Some of these places use buses, Subways and Ferries.  To travel using the Subways, Buses and Ferries depending on the location of the hotel, into the city how much would that cost a family of 4 for five days...? Seems like a hard question to answer... just trying to see if we are spending more money in travel and using up precious time.  We are planning on visiting Times Square, Central Park, shows and one day heading towards Ground Zero, Staten Island Ferry.  Is it more cost efficient to spend the extra money and stay in the city?

The Chelsea area hotel reccomended, which one do you think it is?  Chelsea seems more centrally located than the Lower East side one...which one do you think that LES one is?

By the way, thank you for your help.  To use the discount code do we just copy and paste it into the coupon box?

If staying in Hoboken/Jersey City this is the most convenient commute for staying outside of the city and you would use the PATH train to commute to NYC which is $2.75/pp each way (you can probably have the kids go under the turnstyle even though technically they should pay, but even with Port Authority police there i will sometimes ask if "do we have to pay for the kids?" and am told to have them go under.

If looking at Secaucus you would commute by bus and the fare would be about $3.75/pp each way... kids about half that price, but on weekends (Friday 7pm-Mon 6am kids are free... technically up to 11 years old but nobody will question your 12 year old how old s/he is)

The ferry is prohibitively expensive (something like $8/pp each way)

If you look in my post above at the bottom of each i have given my best guess/comments (ie- look for the ==> below each listing)

However, i'd suggest not just looking at the price differential when also taking into consideration commuting cost, but also consider the time, (in)convenience, and you lose on the 'buzz' of staying directly in NYC.  Sometimes it does pay to stay outside the city, but realize there are intangible costs associated with it as well.

Can't figure out the code to get the discount on Hotwire?

Seriously considering the 3.5-star Hotel in Central Park South area, what would be your best guess for this hotel?

Thank you for your time

There may be more than one 3.5* hotel offered when searching for your dates.  For help with a HOTWIRE property please include the full details of the offer (star rating, city, zone, room rate per nite, dates of your stay, number of adults/children in your search, and full amenity set associated with the property).  NOTE that to get the full amenity set you will need to search with our BiddingHelper.com tool and click the GREEN 'Full Amenities' button next to the listing.

Partially correct as it does not appear that you're using the GREEN BUTTON next to the listing from the BiddingHelper.com EASY VIEW:

Using the method above i think this is the full amenity set for this offer:

3.5* HOTWIRE Central Park South for $198.00
Free Internet
Fitness
Pool
Restaurant
Hi-Speed Internet
Blind Accessible
Deaf Accessible
Travel Accessible
Room Accessible
Bathroom Accessible
Handicapped Parking
Roll-in Shower
==> if this is what you're seeing, from the Hotwire Hotel List this matches previous reports for The Watson Hotel and would be my best guess for this one (although i think both the Chelsea and Lower East Side properties above would be better choices as each offers closer subway access than this one)
