RamR
Thanks for the reply. Budget: Up to about $150 per night. Zones: This I'm not too sure about. Anywhere in Manhattan I suppose. If you need more details than that I will have to get more information. Link to comment
thereuare
I'm very familiar with NYC but we need a few more bits of information or clarification in order to help... 1) is that $150 room rate only before taxes/fees or an all-in amount? 2) what aspects of a hotel are most important to you for this trip... location, style, budget, etc? 3) do you have any specific plans already while in the city so we can try to make hotel selection(s) that are convenient for what you have planned? (if most of your plans focus on one general area) Please remember to return to BetterBidding and use the PRICELINE and HOTWIRE links on the board to begin your travel purchases... or thru our sister site MAPSandHOTELS.com for your regular rate purchases. RamR
Thanks again for the speedy reply. 1. Right now we have reserved a queen room (with free cancellation up to July 30) at the Aloft in the Wall St area for about $170 taxes/fees included. That's the comparison point I guess. So, hopefully we can get something similar for a lower cost through priceline. 2. We don't have too many needs as far as the hotel goes. Something clean and comfortable. Free wifi would be useful. 3. We haven't planned anything yet. 4 days isn't a long time so I think we would be trying to do the most common things. It's my wife's 40th birthday so we want to see a show that's the one thing that we are planning on. Link to comment
thereuare
If price is the sole factor then you can do better than your back-up with a King bed here (confirm your dates on the landing page of the link provided below): 4* Downtown - Wall Street for $118 Business Center Restaurant Free Internet Fitness Center No Smoking Rooms/Facilities ==> best guess here would be the Holiday Inn Manhattan Financial District However, Downtown-Wall St. is typically not the most convenient location for the average tourist. The following are about the same price as your current back-up reservation but will get you more centrally located in midtown along with our best guess(es) for each (again, confirm all dates on the landing page of any links provided below): 4* Empire State Building Area for $141 Business Center Restaurant Free Internet Fitness Center No Smoking Rooms/Facilities ==> Marriott Vacation Club Pulse, New York City is my guess for this one 4* Grand Central Terminal - UN for $132 Business Center Restaurant Fitness Center No Smoking Rooms/Facilities ==> Hotel Boutique At Grand Central or the Club Quarters Grand Central 4* Rockefeller Center - Bryant Park for $146 Business Center Restaurant Free Internet Fitness Center No Smoking Rooms/Facilities ==> Club Quarters Midtown (or slight chance of the Club Quarters, Opposite Rockefeller Center) 4* Midtown East for $139 Pets Allowed Business Center Free Internet No Smoking Rooms/Facilities ==> Fifty NYC-An Affinia Hotel From HOTWIRE (use withour discount link at the top of the page or in my signature below): 4* Midtown East for $140.00 Free Internet Boutique Smoke Free Fitness Restaurant Business Laundry Hi-Speed Internet ==> Hotel Boutique at Grand Central 3.5* Times Square North Free Internet Fitness Restaurant Business Hi-Speed Internet ==> Hilton Garden Inn New York/Central Park South-Midtown West Questions / thoughts on the properties above? RamR
Yeah, I thought the Wall St area might not be the best. I did just want to get a fully cancelable backup in place though. What are the options for "name your own price"? Link to comment
AaronJB
You can bid on these zones and possibly get something for slightly/moderately less, but you have to be willing to accept ANY hotel at the star rating picked in the zones chosen - because a hotel is showing on PRICELINE EXPRESS does not necessarily mean it will be the hotel won on PRICELINE bidding. Were any of the hotels mentioned above of interest? RamR
Is there any general idea of approximately what type of bids have been accepted lately for 4 star? Is there a suggested strategy for bidding? Link to comment

Yes, but first we would need to know which zone(s) are acceptable to you for this stay. None of the hotels / prices above were of interest? RamR
Quick question. What kind of fees and taxes can I expect on top of the prices mentioned in post #6 above for express booking options? Are these the same as can be expected for "name your own price"? Thanks Link to comment
AaronJB
If you click the PRICELINE EXPRESS links provided to each offer you can see the total amount include fees/taxes... for the HOTWIRE offers you can repeat the search and locate the same hotel among the offers to see the total amount for each. RamR
Hi again. We've had some distractions recently but still have our fall back option which can still be cancelled up to tomorrow. It's looking less like an area we are interested in so we are now looking more specifically at a place in midtown. To start that process we want to know what is likely available on the PRICELINE EXPRESS booking option. Any help is appreciated. Thanks in advance. Link to comment
thereuare
I think the following are your best options at this late stage of the game along with my best guess for each (confirm your dates on the landing pages of any links provided below): 4* Grand Central Terminal - UN for $125 Business Center Restaurant Fitness Center No Smoking Rooms/Facilities ==> Hotel Boutique At Grand Central... a little far east, but a very good deal for these dates, and do-able as you're a few blocks from Grand Central for subway access 4* Rockefeller Center - Bryant Park for $130 Business Center Restaurant Fitness Center No Smoking Rooms/Facilities ==> Club Quarters, Opposite Rockefeller Center... good reviews and centrally located 4.5* Chelsea Area for $142 Pets Allowed Business Center Restaurant Fitness Center No Smoking Rooms/Facilities ==> INNSIDE New York Nomad... jump in star rating but this hotel also charges a resort fee which makes it a bit more than the others above Please remember to return to BetterBidding and use the PRICELINE and HOTWIRE links on the board to begin your travel purchases... or thru our sister site MAPSandHOTELS.com for your regular rate purchases. RamR
OK. Thanks. We will make our decision and booking tomorrow. We have to decide between a bit better quality (the first option) and a bit better location (the second option). We might still want to consider bidding for a midtown 4 star hotel on priceline. What more details do I need to give in order to get a strategy for this option? Link to comment
AaronJB
Please provide your desired max budget per night, as well as the acceptable zones (by name). Additionally, a hotel showing on PRICELINE EXPRESS does not necessarily mean that will be the hotel won on the bidding side of the service. Please remember to return to BetterBidding and use the PRICELINE and HOTWIRE links on the board to begin your travel purchases... or thru our sister site MAPSandHOTELS.com for your regular rate purchases. RamR
Maximum budget if bidding would be $150 but I guess it would make more sense to take one that is listed on the Express option if that is the case. So, maximum might be $130 since that is what is available on the Express option. Areas would be Times Square - Theatre District Midtown East Grand Central Terminal - UN Rockefeller Center - Bryant Park Madison Square Garden - Convention Area Midtown West - Hell's Kitchen Central Park South Link to comment
RamR
I also see the express options have changed. We will be deciding on a hotel today so if you could give an update on what is available with that option now that would be great too. Up to the $155 per night one I suppose. Link to comment
RamR
We would also like to consider this option Boro Hotel Long Island City (Queens) Map Free Internet Is that one possibly on the express deal? Link to comment
thereuare
Why would you now want to stay in Long Island City (which is less convenient than staying in Manhattan) when there are very reasonably priced and good options above? What would be the goal of staying in Long Island City? Let's try to stay focused on what you really want from this stay, as you need to be willing and ready to take a good deal when it appears, since as you can see, good offers can quickly disappear (especially this close to check-in) while you wait to explore other options. (at this point you should already have a very good idea of what a good deal is and act upon it) Please remember to return to BetterBidding and use the PRICELINE and HOTWIRE links on the board to begin your travel purchases... or thru our sister site MAPSandHOTELS.com for your regular rate purchases. RamR
I've just noticed the Even Hotel at 221 East 44th St. This seems like a very good option if not a slight bit above our budget. Are there any thoughts on this one? Link to comment
RamR
Went ahead and bid on the EVEN Hotel at 221 East 44th St. and got it for $140/night. Thanks for all the help... next time I will be more organized. Link to comment
thereuare
Glad to see you found something that works well for your needs. Was this a PRICELINE EXPRESS, HOTWIRE, or a regular rate purchase where you knew the hotel name prior to your purchase? You're also near my often recommended Ess-A-Bagel (Third Ave at 51st St) which has one of the best bagels in the city, makes for a nice, and relatively inexpensive, breakfast among local NYers. Enjoy your stay. Please use this HOTWIRE and these PRICELINE LINKS: HOTELS, CAR RENTALS, and AIRFARE to begin your travel purchases Link to comment
