Hi all, thanks for the help on this site.  We are traveling to New York city in a couple weekends, and finding suitable accomodations within my budget was very stressful.  After doing a lot of research on all the different travel sites, and this one, I settled on a Hotwire Hot rate deal listed at $149/night for a 3.5 star hotel in Times square south with a 90% Hotwire approval rating.  It turned out being he Holiday Inn New York City - Times Square, and came out to a total of $195.33 per night, or a total of $586 for my three nights.  Thanks for all your help and hard work that went into this site and these forums.  The same room booked out at $856 for my three nights on the non-refundable quote on Holiday Inn's website.  I was going to try and book a 4.5 star to 5 star place, but in the end, decided I could use the extra $300 for food and entertainment.

Ammenities listed:

Free Internet, smoke free rooms, fitness center, restaurant(s), Buisiness center, internet access

Any ideas for saving money getting around town, or advice on places to see or on tours in the City?  I have my GF and her 16yr old daughter (her birthday trip) to try and entertain for the weekend.

Thanks,

Mike

Congratulations on your success and thank you for sharing your win with the board.

The TKTS booth is good for saving money on shows if that is something you plan on doing while in town.

Not too far of a walk from your hotel i like this place for breakfast:

Best Bagel and Coffee

225 W 35th St (between Seventh and Eighth Avenues)

==> take your bagels to go and head back towards your hotel, sitting on the bleachers behind the TKTS booth while people watching and planning your day

Another suggestion:

Juliana's Pizza

19 Old Fulton St, Brooklyn (but first stop in Brooklyn so not like venturing too far outside of Manhattan)

NOTE: almost always a line so i recommend going for lunch and arriving a little before they open so that you're within the fist seating

==> take the A or C train to High St and then walk down towards the water.  After your pizza (some of the best in NYC, imo) walk over the Brooklyn Bridge back towards Manhattan while taking in the skyline along the way

Staten Island Ferry is free and an easy way to see the Statue of Liberty as it passes right by... and if you stand near the front of the boat nice views of Downtown Manhattan as you do the return trip.

Roosevelt Island tram is another way to take in the NYC skyline for just the cost of a subway ride.

Subway is cheapest and quickest way around the city.
