Priceline Hotel: Fishkill area hotels -- why so expensive?

Hi everyone,

Not sure if this is the right place for my question, but here goes!

I'm looking to stay overnight Sat. Aug 6th in the Fishkill/Poughkeepsie area. Maybe I am out of touch and/or haven't traveled in awhile, but why are prices so high? Is this unique to that area, is something going on, etc.?

I have my eye on something like a 2.5 star in that area, and retail prices are around $130-150 per night. I've bid as high as $85 using the rebidding strategy I've read about various places online, but no luck yet. I mean shoot, last summer I took a trip to Ocean City, NJ, and scored a Comfort Inn for about 40 bucks a night. I guess those days are gone?

Any help or insight appreciated!

Welcome to Betterbidding.

Rates will vary substantially due to a number of factors - city-to-city, day-to-day, seasonally, etc. You can't compare a stay in Ocean City, really; broadly, the supply is different and on a more micro level, you may be looking at Fishkill on a busy day or period. Additionally, if you're looking at very small areas, there's less hotels and less competition, but there are still certainly deals. If you look at Ocean City for this particular night, it's extremely expensive. Rates are just very much a case-by-case basis.

I see a 3* on HOTWIRE in this area w/Free breakfast, Free parking, Free Internet, Pet friendly, Fitness center, Pool(s), Self-service laundry, Internet access and a $95 price tag. The TAKE10 coupon which expires on the 21st does appear to work.to take $10 off the total.

What would be your desired max budget per night for this stay?

AaronJB, thanks so much for the quick reply and thorough answer! Totally understand that it's comparing apples to oranges, but it just struck me that I was unable to get a good deal (like 50% off or so) published prices on priceline.

Hadn't checked HOTWIRE yet, but will do so based on that suggestion. Definitely within our budget -- and will use the link you provided.

Thanks again!

Happy to help!

This listing has not yet been ID'd/reported to the board and it may be something else, but a guess would be the Hawthorn Suites. The listing is showing a 4/5 tripadvisor rating on the detail page, so the underlying property does get pretty solid reviews overall.

50% or higher is a pretty fantastic deal in general, but fantastic is really going to vary given what's possible given an area or traffic (or other factors - season, etc) You were lucky to get a deal for $40 in Ocean City (sharing that win as a separate thread would be greatly appreciated); for 8/6, you'd probably have to pay around 3 times as much for a comparable property in Ocean City.

Thanks for using the PRICELINE and HOTWIRE links on the board.
