Hi All,

My wife, 2 year old daughter and I will be travelling to NY for Christmas. We want a hotel within close (walking) distance to restaurants, supermarket etc and ideally close to touristy things. Where would you suggest and what prices are we looking at?

Our daughter can sleep in our bed if need be, room we would like to have a fridge, microwave and potentially kettle/coffee maker.

Thank you

What is the minimum star rating that you're seeking?

Most rooms will have a coffee maker... fridge as standard room amenity becomes scarcer (although can sometimes be brought into the room on request but may have an additional fee... or if the minibar is an 'actual' refrigerator you can ask that housekeeping empty it use that, although some hotels have switched over to minibars specifically designed for the hotel and have sensors that automatically bill for any items removed), and a microwave even less as standard equipment.

If the refrigerator/microwave are necessary then you are likely looking in the $175-$200 range for a 2.5*/3* hotel... unless you can get very lucky and have something with these amenities appear on PRICELINE EXPRESS and/or HOTWIRE.  If you're willing to forgo these items, then you're likely more likely in the range of $110-$120 for a 3* or $120-$130 for a 3.5*/4*.

Although i haven't suggested it in a while, since this is such an extended stay, keep in mind that once you're in the city you could pick up a cheap college dorm style refrigerator from Target, K-mart, etc.for about $60... a microwave for $40-$60.  So for both items about $120 which for your 8 nite stay comes out to $15/nite.  Therefore if you could save $15/nite by using PRICELINE / HOTWIRE and receive a hotel that doesn't offer these amenities, pick these items on your own and you're still ahead of the game.  At the end of your stay offer them to any employee of the hotel for their own use, or for the employee breakroom, or donate them to a local shelter or salvation army type of place.

Hi,

thank you so much for the information. We still haven't booked anywhere.

We we would be happy with a 3 star place, close to touristy things. We have to keep in mind that it's going to be very cold and walking long distances with the 2yr old isn't ideal so close to a subway if possible :)

the he reason for the fridge and microwave is just to keep the baby food cold etc and then easy to heat up a bottle or snack etc for her at night.

What at do you suggest?

thank you

I understand the purpose, but are these needs or wants, as it will determine which service(s) you're able to use and book thru, as well as potentially limit your options.  Would you be able/willing to pick up a dorm-type refrigerator and/or microwave should the hotel not have one available, or could you figure a way to do without them, or is it a must that the hotel offers these items?

Are you ready to book/commit to this trip at this point in time?

Hi,

we we are still looking. Somewhere around the Central Park south, Times Square would be preferable. We are comfortable with our daughter to sleep in our bed but if we can fit a crib in the room even better.

Any suggestions on bidding prices? 3* plus would be preferable. Or any express deals going at the moment under AUD$175 per night.

Thank you

What is this in USD? (and i assume this is before taxes/fees?)  Please post to the board in US Dollars as it makes all rates on the board consistent and not subject to interpretation based upon future currency fluctuations (as well as makes it easier for us to not have to look up an additional piece of information when researching your trip)

Thoughts on any of these:

Row NYC for $116/nite ($30 resort fee on top of this, but still well under your budget)

Amsterdam Court for $126/nite

Wyndham Garden - Manhattan Chelsea West for $131/nite (or $148 to guarantee a King bed and room for a child)

Club Quarters Grand Central for $135/nite

Holiday Inn Sixth Avenue for $138/nite

Yotel - Times Square for $151/nite

TRYP Times Square South for $153/nite

Innside New York Nomad for $159/nite

The Evelyn for $129/nite

The Lexington New York City, Autograph Collection for $134/nite

Omni Berkshire for $152/nite

Any of the above of interest?

There are plenty of hotels at each star level in most zones, so there is a high risk of getting something else besides the above hotels. Bidding is generally slightly-to-moderately higher, so it becomes would you rather have a very good chance of getting a particular property that appeals to you or spend slightly-to-moderately less and risk potentially getting something that doesn't appeal?

Let us know which route you would prefer and we would be happy to suggest our thoughts on how to proceed.

Hi,

im pretty happy spending $1200-$1300 for 8 nights including taxes, if you think we could get a better hotel for that price then we will hold off but at the moment Row NYC looks the goods. Although I have just read the reviews and might change to Amsterdam court :)

The rooms look pretty comfortable and enough space for 3 aswell which is good.

what do you think?

Nobody can say if rates will come down, or move higher, between now and your trip, it all depends upon supply/demand and how actual new reservations/cancellations come in relative to expected new reservation/cancellations.

If one of the hotels above meets your needs and is within budget, then it is better to take it now as the price could move higher, or the hotel could disappear entirely and leave you with other options that you may not like as much.

I think the biggest risk is that in the CPS zone is the Hudson Hotel which has notoriously small rooms, even by NYC standards, and would certainly not accommodate 3 people (no matter how little the 3rd guest is).  Even though the Hudson is 4* rated by PRICELINE, the star rating you choose when you bid is the minimum you're willing to accept, so there is no way to avoid being 'upgraded' if you include this zone in your bidding.

However, HOTWIRE has made the decision for you as the Amsterdam Court is not currently being offered when searching for your dates (in fact no 3* in the Times Square North zone is being offered).

The Innside New York Nomad and the Omni were the best hotels in the bunch above (also some of the pricier ones, but still within your budget)... but the Innside New York Nomad would probably not be the best location for you with a toddler in tow.

Let us know how you'd like to proceed.

I think you need to decide what is really most important to you for this trip... hotel quality, budget, location, etc.

The Omni is by far the nicest and best reviewed hotel from the previous list above, and within your original $160/nite budget, but you chose a different hotel and then changed the budget to $1200-$1300 all-in (which is very different than $160/nite before taxes/fees... especially with NYC hotel tax running about 15%)

Given you have things that you would like from the hotel (including triple occupancy which can be an issue in NYC) i don't think bidding on PRICELINE is the best option since you have to be willing to accept any hotel in the zone at the star rating your better that you bid, my suggestion would be continue with HOTWIRE and/or PRICELINE EXPRESS and try to 'choose' a hotel where you can have a guess as to what it is that you may win.

A lot of time and effort goes into researching hotels, so take a minute to think about what it is that is most important to you for this trip (budget, location, room comfort, etc) and we will try to find you the best option(s) that meet your true criteria.

Hi,

sorry that's my mistake, it was meant to be $1200-$1300 not including taxes.

I definitely like to location and comfort of the Omni, we aren't concerend about fitting a crib if we have a king bed as our daughter will sleep with us :)

location wise we want to be close to all the action as it will be freezing cold and we will have a pram, so long walks are out of the question lol Omni is great location :)

thank

you

I would agree that the Omni would be a terrific result if it is in budget. Please keep us updated on what you decide and let us know if we can be of further assistance.

Not sure if this is just the part the child lays in or it includes the entire wheeled structure (i had to google it), but if you have nothing to wheel your child in, i would suggest buying a cheap 'umbrella stroller' when you get here (try Target, K-Mart, etc) assuming your child is old enough to sit in one.  They can be had for $20-$40 as it will give you much more flexibility in getting around, carrying down stairs to the subway (not all have elevators), and let your 2 year old enjoy the sights/sounds of the city as you stroll around.

Also, NYC is geographically large and the 'sights' are all over the city, there is no one location that will have you be close to everything... you should expect to walk, subway, cab, etc. to get to many places.

What about any of the other hotels in this post (assuming any are still available, as it has been 5 days since that research was done and the inventory can often change quickly)

Hi,

a pram ram is the whole thing lol wheels attached etc

I think we will spend most our time wandering around the shops, Times Square and Central Park so would love to be close to all those attractions.

How much is the Omni currently? Any other hotels you suggest on current pricing?

thank you
