Hotwire Hotel: Chicago downtown wt or rn 2/19-2/22

My wife and I are taking our son to chicago and want to stay somewhere central north of the river and preferably 4-4.5 stars. A budget of $60-90. Our son loves to stay in nice spacious hotels. Last year we stayed at the hard rock and the room was great but would like to be north of the river this time. Any suggestions would be great.

To help narrow the field, what exactly is it that you're looking for in a hotel for this trip?

 

Even if researching each hotel takes 3 minutes (it can often take longer) we're looking at nearly a half an hour to research all the hotels above which inhibits us replying to everyone who is looking for help in a timely manner.

 

Other than 'north of the River' what other criteria is that you're looking for in a hotel this stay?  AaronJB is local to this area and if you indicate what you're needs are for this trip, how important it is to stay near the low end of your budget vs. the higher end, what characteristic would cause you to pay at the higher end (or exceed your budget), etc. i'm sure we can save time while also finding you the best hotel for your needs.

I understand and apologize.  The main things are being close to the shopping and restaurants etc. and having a hotel with a large spacious room that is a little more upscale. We had stayed at the Hard Rock last time and got an upgraded room and it was very large and super nice but would like to be north of the river this time. We do not mind walking but this time of year walking in the evening can get very cold! We will need parking which I know is expensive in Chicago as we will be driving in from Ohio.

 

Do you think Intercontinental would be a good fit?

-- Likely Holiday Inn Mart Plaza. This is not centrally located in the SW corner of the zone, but it does have some benefits - it is not terribly far from a ton of restaurants in River North and there is a Brown Line train station at the Mart. The other benefit of this property is that a number of rooms here have river views. However, that is an upgrade and there is no guarantee of getting that via a HOTWIRE reservation, but it would not hurt to ask. If you stayed here and didn't get it, there is a bar/cafe next to the check in that has gorgeous river views.

 

High end:

-- Likely James. Location couldn't better right off Michigan Ave. Eataly a block or so away, Trader Joe's around the corner. Easy walk to River North.

 

I'm also seeing what appears to be the W Lakeshore for $79 (4.5 Water Tower Boutique, Restaurant, Pool, Indoor Pool, Fitness, Hi-Speed Internet, Business, Laundry, Spa, Pet Friendly), but for 2 bucks more the potential James is much more appealing from a location standpoint.) The W Lakeshore is by Navy Pier, but while I'm not a fan of Navy Pier in general, there's really not much going on there in Feb (plus, it's even colder on a windy day.)
