hsb10246 Posted August 20, 2015 Report Posted August 20, 2015 Hi, I am totally new to hotel bidding and I need some help to find a decent hotel for 2 nights. We are a family of 4 (3 adults and 1 child) visitng New York 5-7 September. I realize two weeks before the visit it is not the best time to start booking hotels, but somehow we couldn't plan this trip in advance. We are hoping to find a >3* hotel for less than $130 per night. Is that possible? The zones that we are thinking about are:Times SquareEmpire State BuildingEast VillageSoHoFinancial DistrictChelsea We are also open to any other zones near these areas that you think we could find a hotel at this price range. Thank you.
AaronJB Posted August 20, 2015 Report Posted August 20, 2015 Welcome to Betterbidding. :)The issue with PRICELINE and NYC is that, given the size of rooms at many NYC properties, if you bid you will likely get 1 bed. Hot.wire, where you can indicate the amount of people in the party and get bedding for the entire group as a result - is a better option in NYC for beyond double occupancy. Unfortunately, rates are high for these dates (once September starts, NYC becomes expensive through most of the Fall and early Winter.) If you did bid, you're probably looking more at the $160-170 range or higher depending on star rating and zone. In terms of searching for 4 people on Hot.wire, in Midtown unfortunately you are looking at over $200. thereuare Posted August 20, 2015 Report Posted August 20, 2015 If you are flying or taking the train into this area... where do you arrive? If you're driving, from which direction are you coming from? hsb10246 Posted August 20, 2015 Author Report Posted August 20, 2015 Thank you for your replies. I understand the issue with double occupancy. But I think we should just take that risk; book 1 room and then deal with it somehow (maybe ask for an extra bed). We are driving from Pennsylvania.I do not think we can find a hotel with parking space (free or with reasonable price).I have driven to NYC a couple of times before (during weekends) and I parked my car somewhere on the streets in Brooklyn (which was just a 30-minute subway ride away from Manhattan).I was thinking we could do the same thing this time.We could also choose our hotel in Brooklyn if you think that would give us better options. Thanks.
thereuare Posted August 20, 2015 Report Posted August 20, 2015 If you let us know which zone(s) are acceptable we will suggest a strategy for you to follow... but i will add that i don't think your budget is likely to succeed for a 3* or better in Manhattan. As well, we don't usually recommend booking double occupancy in NYC when you need quad occupancy as rooms in Manhattan are usually smaller then in most other places in the country and therefore have a high percentage of rooms with only one bed. Many hotels charge more for rooms with 2 beds (vs. rooms with only one bed) and many also do not have rollaways on hand (as they don't want to utilize the extra space needed to store them) You could stay in Brooklyn (although i think your budget may be difficult there as well) or i would consider points in NJ where you can make an easy commute into the city... it's not as convenient as staying directly in Manhattan, but i think it may be what you need to do in order to get something within your budget. hsb10246 Posted August 21, 2015 Author Report Posted August 21, 2015 These are the zones we can accept. Following your suggestion, I've also added two zones in NJ. Midtown EastEmpire State BuildingTimes Square - Theater DistrictEast Village - Lower East SideSoHo - TribecaJersey CityHoboken - North BergenGreenpoint - Williamsburg Thank you.
thereuare Posted August 21, 2015 Report Posted August 21, 2015 The NJ zones are not in the same region as the NY zones so you can't bid these at the same time. Did you want to first bid: Midtown East Empire State Building Times Square - Theater District East Village - Lower East Side SoHo - Tribeca Greenpoint - Williamsburg ... up to your bidding limit, then if rejected bid: Jersey City Hoboken - North Bergen ... up to your bidding limit? NOTE: in the first phase you could bid all but Greenpoint up to your limit, if rejected then try again while including Greentpoint, if rejected then try the NJ zones Please confirm and we will advise accordingly. hsb10246 Posted August 21, 2015 Author Report Posted August 21, 2015 Yes, I want to first bid the NY zones up to my bidding limit, if rejected, include Greenpoint, and then if rejected again, include Jersey City and Hoboken - North Bergen.
