My husband and I will be in New York for 5 nights from September 24 - 29. It is our 1st visit. We want to be centrally located (midtown and surrounding). Our budget was 300 all in but I think we have determined that we need to up our budget. We want to stay in at least a highly rated 3*. What do you think our best option / strategy is?

Welcome to BetterBidding!

Please start by reading your messages (which will also remove the red box at the top of the page and make the board easier to navigate)

Our budget was 300 all in...

To confirm, all-in per nite OR for the full 5 nites?

If you meant all 5 nites then you'll need to increase your budget substantially. At current rates you're more likely looking at $160-$180 per nite (before fees/taxes) for a 3* or better in Manhattan for these dates.

Alternatively you could stay outside of the Manhattan and commute in daily, but this would obviously be less convenient (and you would still need to likely at least more than double your budget), but it comes down to budget vs. convenience and where you're willing to make compromises.

Please use the PRICELINE and HOTWIRE links on the board to begin your travel purchases... or thru our sister site MAPS and HOTELS.com for your regular rate purchases.

Let us know your thoughts on the above and we'll take it from there.

I see that prices are indeed high for these dates, but i also see this 3* Times Square hotel (confirm your dates on the landing page) for $189/nite with Free Internet and Business Center, so at the moment your budget shouldn't be an issue.

My guess for this property would be the Tryp By Wyndham New York Times Square... do you want to take this PRICELINE EXPRESS offer OR try bidding on PRICELINE? If you want to try bidding, please let us know your maximum bid price and the zones, by PRICELINE name, that you're willing to accept, we will then suggest a strategy for you to follow.

Thank you for the suggestion. My husband is not loving the reviews on the Tryp Wyndham hotel even though the price is right. Maybe we need to bump it up to a 4 star rating. Do you think 4* under 300 per night taxes in will be possible if we bid? Are there any risky / less than ideal hotels in TS or Midtown that we may end up with?

The CPS zone contains the Hudson Hotel which has notoriously small rooms (even by NYC standards) and is often avoided as a result.

If bidding up to $250/nite (bid price) i think you may need to include Lower East Side zone in your bidding to increase your chances, which is a little south of 'midtown'... it's not as convenient as midtown, but it's do-able.

Generally speaking the following work fine for the average visitor:

Chelsea - some hotels can be up to a 10 minute walk to the subway but this is a very hot area right now with lots of bars, clubs, restaurants, cafes, etc. so it is still considered very desirable by most

ESB - generally no known issues

MSG - generally no known issues, although the New Yorker has received some mixed reviews of late

MTW - generally no known issues

MTE - most 4* hotels are well located, but a few can be up to a 15 minute walk to the subway

TS - generally no known issues

If you need to expand further you could then also consider:

LES

Soho

Please confirm which zones you'd like to include in your bidding, as well as confirm your maximum bid price (before fees/taxes) and we'll advise accordingly.

If the above is rejected HOTWIRE has a 4* hotel in the ESB zone for $254/nite but it shows no amenities so i'm not sure which property it is, and no way to know if this property would also be 4* rated by PRICELINE, but we can cross that bridge and discuss options further if the above is not successful.

Any questions feel free to ask.
