john9o9 Posted July 15, 2015 Report Posted July 15, 2015 Am planning on driving to manhattan 7/28-31. What kind of hotels can I expect in 3 star range? Do you know anything about the Pod 59/31? I noted the strategy mentioned to former bidder on 7/15 and wonder if I should just do the same?I was also wondering about parking. Is the best idea to prepay a pass for the days there and any suggestions for that? I was thinking about midtown east or west or upper/lower east west. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Another possibility is Brooklyn as my son will be staying there at I believe Long Island college dormitory?
thereuare Posted July 15, 2015 Report Posted July 15, 2015 Welcome to BetterBidding! You can see all hotels previously won and reported to the board in our Priceline Hotel List and Hotwire Hotel List. Not sure why you're looking/considering The Pod hotels, but note that many of their rooms are shared bathroom (and bunk beds) so if this is not acceptable make sure you're looking at a room with a private bath so that you're making a valid apples-to-apples comparison. As far as staying in Manhattan vs. Brooklyn, i think it depends upon the purpose of this trip... is it more to sightsee OR to see/spend time with your son (or is he not of college age and attending a summer program there and you won't really be spending time with him but you'd like to be nearby?) If you are spending time with your son, will you be doing that in Brooklyn or in Manhattan? What is your expected budget per nite (before fees/taxes) for this trip? john9o9 Posted July 15, 2015 Author Report Posted July 15, 2015 My son is just spending time there after trip abroad, he is staying there as inexpensive place to stay as he is college student and they open their dorms to college students. P urpose is to spend time with him primarily in manhattan. My wife found pod and mentioned it. Budget is 150-180 plus taxes.
thereuare Posted July 15, 2015 Report Posted July 15, 2015 If most of your time will be spent in Manhattan then i would stay in the city and have your son meet you there. You could likely get a 4* hotel within your $180 or under budget... would you want to pay more for a higher rated hotel OR is the goal the least expensive 3* or better? Bidding on PRICELINE will likely give you the cheapest price, but HOTWIRE and/or PRICELINE EXPRESS will offer good deals as well if you need to have certain amenities or prefer to have a guess as to the hotel you may receive before your purchase. john9o9 Posted July 15, 2015 Author Report Posted July 15, 2015 How much savings going 3 star vs 4 star? Another consideration is may need to get roll a way as son will join us for last night.
AaronJB Posted July 15, 2015 Report Posted July 15, 2015 If you need a rollaway, you may want to then consider HOTWIRE (searching for triple occupancy) or PRICELINE EXPRESS (for a hotel that shows 'Bed Choice' and one of the choices will accommodate your family), as there are rooms in NYC (even at the 3.5/4* level) where fitting a roll away may not be possible. john9o9 Posted July 17, 2015 Author Report Posted July 17, 2015 so far it looks like Hotwire is the best alternative as all priceline hotels only guarantee up to two adults.Hotwire has a 4 star Midtown east for 187 but only 35% recommend...there is a four star upper east at 202 65% recommendfour star empire state with 90% recommend for 217four star 90% recommend east village 188A lot of hotels in Long idsland city and I am wondering if that might not be a decent alternative for parking as well? Thanks for all the help!

We are coming in from the west, i.e. Jersey. Thanks again!
AaronJB Posted July 18, 2015 Report Posted July 18, 2015 I'd guess the Roosevelt, with a slightly lesser guess of the Wyndham Midtown 45. john9o9 Posted July 18, 2015 Author Report Posted July 18, 2015 Thank you I guess what is throwing me off is the 35% recommendation. Any idea why that low for those properties?
AaronJB Posted July 18, 2015 Report Posted July 18, 2015 Not sure, but I'd not recommend considering a hotel with 35% approval. john9o9 Posted July 19, 2015 Author Report Posted July 19, 2015 I am looking at parking and found a link to parknsave to prepay parking at around 25$ per day. Is this best option and I would presume safe?
thereuare Posted July 19, 2015 Report Posted July 19, 2015 Have you already found/purchased a hotel? If so, where did you decide to stay (and was this a PRICELINE, HOTWIRE, or regular rate hotel purchase)... if not, how can you find and prepay for parking without yet knowing where you will be staying?
