clark105 Posted January 8, 2006 Report Posted January 8, 2006 I will be in NYC from 7/12/06--7/18/06. Of course, I'd like a 5* (who wouldn't?), but a 4* is A-OK. I'm not picky about which zone I end up with. My max bid is $200/night, but I'd really love to go lower than that, of course! Please give bidding suggestions. I have used Priceline before, but not with any real strategy. Also, is it too early to book? I am wondering if I should wait until later. Thanks!
clark105 Posted January 9, 2006 Author Report Posted January 9, 2006 I have often wondered this. Is there a "suggested" amount for bids related to the star level?I know this would vary by region, and I know that Priceline offers a suggested amount, but I wondered if there was some "master list" on this site somewhere for starting bids.
thenewbie Posted January 9, 2006 Report Posted January 9, 2006 There are minimum bids set by Priceline but there aren't any across the board "suggested" bids. There are many factors in deciding bid amounts including the city and dates of the trip. If you'd like information about suggested bids for a trip, you'd need to ask specifically for your dates. Quoted below are the minimum bids required by Priceline. You can tell this by looking at the HTML code on the Priceline bid page. At least this is what I believe is represented. 1 Star 152 Star 172.5 Star 193 Star 25 3.5 Star 50 (Boutique)4 Star 404.5 Star 40 (Resort)5 Star 55But you can bid, for example, $38 for a 3* and get upgraded to a 4* (or otherwise jump levels with a low bid).
thenewbie Posted January 9, 2006 Report Posted January 9, 2006 Before we can give advice, for "any" area, does that mean MTE, MTW, and UM-CPS or does that also include Downtown-SoHo and MTS? Here are NYC Zone Descriptions provided by the board's moderator. You will want to look at Priceline to see the current layout of the map, as the descriptions were written a few years ago.Let us know what areas are acceptable and whether you want to try for 4*, as 5* are rarely (if ever) accepted in NYC.
clark105 Posted January 9, 2006 Author Report Posted January 9, 2006 Truly, any area is fine. I'd like to stay out of lower Manhattan, but if that's where I end up, it will be okay.
thereuare Posted January 9, 2006 Report Posted January 9, 2006 Summer is low season in NYC so i woudldn't bid up to your limit at this early point in time. As well, there is no reason to compromise on an 'inferior' zone at this point. At the 4* level you have two re-bid zones available and this is how i would bid:Select 4* MTW...Bid $100, if rejected add re-bid zone...Bdi $105, if rejected add re-bid zone...Bid $110, if rejected close browser and re-access priceline however you did previously.Select 4* MTE...Bid $100, if rejected add re-bid zone...Bdi $105, if rejected add re-bid zone...Bid $110, if rejected close browser and re-access priceline however you did previously.Select 4* UM/CPS...Bid $100, if rejected add re-bid zone...Bdi $105, if rejected add re-bid zone...Bid $110, if rejected close browser and re-access priceline however you did previously.Select 4* MTW and MTE...Bid $115, if rejected add re-bid zone...Bdi $120, if rejected add re-bid zone...Bid $125, if rejected close browser and re-access priceline however you did previously.Select 4* MTW and UM/CPS...Bid $115, if rejected add re-bid zone...Bdi $120, if rejected add re-bid zone...Bid $125, if rejected close browser and re-access priceline however you did previously.Select 4* MTW and MTE and UM/CPS...Bid $130, if rejected add re-bid zone...Bdi $135, if rejected add re-bid zone...Bid $140.Any questions feel free to ask.
