Hotwire Hotel: Chicago suburbs?

Hi! What are the best options of suburbs to stay in when going to something at the United Center?  We really don't want to deal with all of the traffic downtown, and the expensive parking, not to mention that the hotels downtown are usually more expensive.  We would prefer to just stay at a hotel somewhat close to a train station and then take that downtown (and then take either bus or cab to United Center).  Any suggestions of areas to look at?  We don't want to stay in a dump.  Thank you!

I'm sure AaronJB will offer some suggestions once he sees this thread, but to save a step in some of the question he will likely need to know in order to better advise you...

What are the dates of your stay? What is your desired star rating and expected budget (per nite before taxes/fees)?

The North Suburbs are really quite nice - a lot of restaurants, lot of shopping, some sights and two different Metra train lines (one goes to Union, one Ogilvie, but those stations are basically next to each other anyways so it becomes which line is your hotel closer to.)

The way the suburbs are, you couldn't walk from hotels to these lines but they are often a short (or sometimes very short) drive.

The one issue with the Metra lines is that they basically stop going out to the burbs around midnight-ish. Depending on how late you plan to be, that may be an issue.

Let me know date/s of travel and I would be happy to offer further thoughts.
