Got this hotel for $185 / night for 3 nights. Total $660 for entire stay with taxes included.

A bit steep for our budget, but there seems to be no other kid-friendly alternative given that we're booking this late. We're traveling with our 1.5 year-old son to visit Chicago for the first time. Without a car, we were looking to stay close to N Michigan Ave. as possible. Found this on Hotwire, and it seemed right.

Amenities: Free Internet, Indoor pool(s), Fitness center, Pool(s), Restaurant(s), Business center, Internet access.

Do let me know if you'd recommend any other area for lower price, for future reference.

PS. I'm sure AaronJB will post some tips regarding the area for future reference.

Unfortunately, these just appear to be busy dates. Usually I recommend staying North of the river, although if there's enough of a price difference between staying North of the river and South, South is fine (the Loop seems similarly expensive for these dates.) Sometimes you may have better luck if you split your stay, but that likely requires moving hotels. Sometimes the Hyatt at McCormick is noticeably cheaper if there is not a convention, but that's really inconvenient and has to be much cheaper to justify being in a spot where there's really nothing much directly around the hotel and you have to use transit to get around.

As someone very familiar with the area, I often recommend if people are driving in to stay in the North suburbs. Hotels are way cheaper for comparable properties, free parking and the North burbs have some sights of their own. There is a 30-40 minute train ride - from the perspective of someone very familiar with the area, I think that's really quite easy. From a tourist perspective, it's not convenient but it's the trade-off; is a 30-40 minute train ride downtown and not being in the city worth paying (usually) less than half the hotel cost?

Let me know if you have any city questions.
