Hey all,

My fiancee and I are headed to NYC after our July 18 wedding. We'll be there July 21 through July 25th, 2015. We're looking for a well situated hotel in Manhattan for those days. Given the prices, and the giant bag of money we're dumping on the wedding, we've turned to Hotwire/Priceline to try and find a the hotel!

I'm hoping for a 4*, 4.5* or 5* hotel, ideally with a recommended rating of 85% or higher and a tripadvisor of 4/5 or better, in a fairly trendy area that is well situated to easily visit good restaurants and hop public transit. We have plans to see a couple of Broadway shows and all of the major tourist attractions.

My ideal budget is under $300 CAD, including fees. It's so unfortunate how much the Canadian dollar has dropped in the last few months! However, I am pretty flexible in my budget and will go higher for the right property!

My budget works out to about $185 USD as the pre-tax bid price.

1. What areas do folks suggest I look? I was browsing a bit in Midtown Central, Midtown East, and the Theater District, but I'm very open to suggestions!

2. I've been browsing a bit already, but when do the folks here suggest I start seriously looking at Hotwire and Priceline?

Here are 4 I've seen so far that fall within my budget in these areas:

4.5*, Midtown Central, $164/night

Fitness center, Restaurant(s), Business center, Self-service laundry, Internet access, Accessible for visually impaired, Accessible for hearing impaired, Accessible path of travel, In-room accessibility, Accessible bathroom, Accessible parking, Roll-in shower

90% recommended, 4.5/5 tripadvisor

Guess: Warwick

4*, Midtown East, $170/night

Fitness center, Restaurant(s), Business center, Internet access

80% recommended, no tripadvisor

Guess: It could be any of several (One UN, The Lexington, Kimberley, Barclay, Hilton, Doubletree, The Club Quarters). Given no reference to tripadvisor in the listing, though, I'm really not sure!

4*, Midtown Central, $172/night

Pet friendly, Boutique hotel, Fitness center, Business center, Internet access

75% recommended, 4/5 tripadvisor

Guess*: My best guess is The Mansfield

4*, Midtown East, $182/night

Pet friendly, Boutique hotel, Fitness center, Restaurant(s), Business center, Self-service laundry, Internet access, Spa services

85% recommended, 3.5/5 on tripadvisor

Guess: My best guess is The W.

I'm also seeing options in the Empire State Building area:

4.5*, Empire State Building, $189/night (pushing the budget a bit)
90% recommended, 4.5/5 tripadvisor
Free Internet, Fitness center, Business center, Self-service laundry, Internet access
Guess: St. Giles - The Tuscany

4*, Empire State Building, $164/night
95% recommended, no tripadvisor

Bidding helper is turning an error when I try to get the amenity set, but Hotwire says Restaurant, Business, and Laundry. The "last booking" was The Kitano.

Guess: St. Giles - The Court or The Kitano

4*, Empire State Building, $179/night, but has a $110 resort fee that pushes my budget...

90% recommended, 4/5 tripadvisor

Boutique hotel, Smoke-free rooms, Fitness center, Restaurant(s), Business center, Internet access, Accessible for visually impaired, Accessible for hearing impaired, Accessible path of travel, In-room accessibility, Wheelchair accessible, Accessible bathroom, Accessible parking, Roll-in shower

Guess: The Roger Williams

Thoughts? Is there anywhere else I should consider looking for something?

The Warwick seems like a pretty good deal. The all-in Hotwire price is $837.82 and the best advanced purchase rate directly through the hotel is $1113.52. That's about 33% savings. My only concern is that it seems very old boys club, business centered. I think we'd prefer something a bit more boutique for the honeymoon.

Thanks!

crr243,

Welcome to BetterBidding!

It takes a considerable amount of time to research hotels, so if you're asking for a large quantity, your post may get pushed to the back of the queue for a time when we have the 20-30 minutes that it would take to properly research all of the hotels above... especially when your post indicates that you may just be 'browsing' and not be ready to commit to a purchase. As you witnessed above, the hotel inventory can and does change frequently, so it's not a good use of time/resources to research hotels which are not ready for purchase, as the hotels (and prices) currently offered may not be the same once you're ready to move forward.

As i'm local to the area i'll offer a few suggestions as to what seems to be to be your best options at the moment:

Empire Hotel for $168/nite - not the best location, but near a subway, hotel has the boutique-y feel with a great roof top bar, but rooms are on the smaller side

Affinia Shelburne (i think this is the hotel offered) for $173/nite.

Are any of the above of interest to act now OR do you want to wait it out and see what is offered in the weeks ahead? If you choose to wait i'd suggest making a back-up reservation at RefundableRates.com and then using our free RateDrop service to get notified if any of the star rating/zone combinations you are interested in drop in price to a rate that you're comfortable paying at this point in time.

Understandable. Thanks for your reply.

As a local, can you provide advice on what areas to search in that might turn up offerings within my budget range and other requirements?

I've heard good  things about SoHo and Chelsea. Would they provide more of a trendy and boutique feel than, say, Midtown?

My advice would be to focus on a hotel that is well located and convenient to the subway, as from there you can easily get to anyplace in the city.

Most visitors leave their hotel in the morning, go to Point A, to Point B, Point C, Point D, etc, etc. and maybe return to their hotel once during the day or perhaps not until late at nite, so the immediate hotel environment is not that important, more important is that you have easy access to mass transit. For example, if you find you love the Chelsea area but you're staying in midtown, you can easy get there in 15 or less in order to hang out, spend your day, visit your favorite coffee shop, bakery, bar, etc.

With the above noted, i think the guessed Warwick offers an excellent value for the current $162/nite offer i'm seeing on HOTWIRE. If you find you don't like the bar at the hotel, you will find plenty of bars in the immediate area to suit your needs... don't like the feel of the hotel restaurant, plenty of other options nearby, etc, etc.

I also see what looks like the W New York (for $180/nite) which may be more your style, but i think the rooms and reviews of the Warwick are not only cheaper, but offer a better value.

Lastly, i'm seeing what looks like the St. Giles - The Tuscany for $187/nite, near the top end of your budget, but gets excellent reviews and may hit all the touch points you're looking for.

We've decided to book a Queen room directly with the Marlton at $235/night + taxes/fees (i.e. $273.17/night).

The rate is refundable until 24 hours prior to our trip, so I'll be keeping my eyes open. However, because of the nature of this trip, we've decided against utilizing an opaque booking.
