kkettner23 Posted March 17, 2015 Report Posted March 17, 2015 I'm looking for a single hotel room for May 2-4 and am a little hesitant to big or buy on Priceline/Hotwire, being I haven't been to Chicago before. I've heard Mag Mile or River North area is the best to select when trying to hotels. Does anyone have any other advise? What star level, where to start bidding, what to try... I will also have a car, so will need somewhere to park. Any help is appreciated!
AaronJB Posted March 17, 2015 Report Posted March 17, 2015 Welcome to Betterbidding. :)Are you flying in and then renting a car or are you driving in? If you are renting a car just for Chicago, it's completely unnecessary. Rates are on the high side for these dates, unfortunately. What would be your desired budget per night and desired star rating? Please use the PRICELINE and HOTWIRE links on the board to begin your travel purchases... or thru our sister site MAPS and HOTELS.com for your regular rate purchases.
kkettner23 Posted March 18, 2015 Author Report Posted March 18, 2015 We will be driving from Minnesota, so unfortunately, we will have to plan for parking. We'd like to find something under $200/nt + parking. Star rating - we don't need anything special, but obviously don't want to stay at like a Travelodge or something questionable. Things like Holiday Inn, Country Inn & Suites, Radisson, Best Western, etc. are just fine for us - we won't be spending much time in the room.
AaronJB Posted March 18, 2015 Report Posted March 18, 2015 I'm seeing a 4* in the Downtown-MP-Grant Park area on HOTWIRE w/Restaurant, Fitness, Smoke Free, Free Internet, Hi-Speed Internet, Business, Travel Accessible, Room Accessible, Bathroom Accessible, Wheelchair Accessible, Roll-in Shower for $154 (you may see a slightly different listing.)-This would be a possible match for the Hyatt on Wacker, which is close to the Millennium Park/Grant Park parking lots. I'm also seeing what appears to be the W Lakeshore for $175. I'm seeing rates for less than half of that for a 4* in the North Suburbs ($60) with free parking (parking will likely be at least around $25-35+ tax for a public lot downtown.) The only issue becomes then you have to take a Metra train 30-40 +/- minutes each way to downtown. This is easy, very nice (the Metra trains are nicer than the CTA trains) and not far from most suburban hotels. It does make for a trek into downtown, but it becomes whether the savings are worthwhile. The North burbs are quite nice and if you're driving in from Minnesota, you don't have to drive all the way into or out of the city. Let us know if any of the above would be of interest and we would be happy to offer further thoughts. kkettner23 Posted March 20, 2015 Author Report Posted March 20, 2015 Any ideas on what the Millennium Park, Loop & Grant Park Area Hotel on Priceline Express Deals for $134 would be? 2.5 stars. Fitness center, free internet. Don't want to be stuck in a dump, though...
AaronJB Posted March 20, 2015 Report Posted March 20, 2015 This would likely be the Congress Hotel, which is really not something I'd recommend. While unfortunately more expensive, I'd rather recommend the potential Hyatt on Hot.wire. Or I'd rather recommend staying in the North burbs with free parking and much cheaper hotels. kkettner23 Posted March 20, 2015 Author Report Posted March 20, 2015 I'm looking for a single hotel room for May 2-4 for my husband and I. What star level is recommended for Mag MIle/River North area and what is a reasonable rate to start bidding at? We'd like to stay around, preferably under, $150/nt since we'll be driving and will have to pay for parking as well. We don't need anything spectacular, but we do want something reasonable and in a safe area.
thereuare Posted March 20, 2015 Report Posted March 20, 2015 hot.,wire has a 4* hotel in the Downtown - Millennium Park - Grant Park for $154/nite (your price may differ by a few dollars) with: Free Internet Smoke Free Fitness Restaurant Business Hi-Speed Internet Travel Accessible Room Accessible Wheelchair Accessible Bathroom Accessible Roll-in Shower ... i believe this is the Hyatt Regency Chicago referenced by AaronJB above. Also, using the current link in my signature knocks $10 off this purchase brining this to within your $150/nite budget. Does this work for your needs? If you prefer to bid, please let us know what star rating you'd like to try for and which zones(s), by PRICELINE name (both Grand Park and NMA... or now only NMA??) and we will suggest a strategy for you to follow. Please use the PRICELINE and HOTWIRE links on the board to begin your travel purchases... or thru our sister site MAPS and HOTELS.com for your regular rate purchases. Please use this HOTWIRE and these PRICELINE LINKS: HOTELS, CAR RENTALS, and AIRFARE to begin your travel purchases
AaronJB Posted March 20, 2015 Report Posted March 20, 2015 The Hyatt couldn't be better located, it's right by the Michigan Ave. bridge. The Art Institute and Millennium Park are just to the South, the Michigan Ave. shopping area just to the North. kkettner23 Posted March 20, 2015 Author Report Posted March 20, 2015 Do you think we'd save money by bidding on Price.line instead of taking the Hot.wire deal?
AaronJB Posted March 21, 2015 Report Posted March 21, 2015 You could likely get a 4* slightly-to-moderately cheaper via bidding, but you have to be willing to stay at any of the potential hotels at the star rating chosen in the zone picked, instead of being able to have a guess as to the property you may receive. Are you interested in River North-NMA and Millennium Park-Loop-GP or just Millennium Park-Loop-GP? kkettner23 Posted March 21, 2015 Author Report Posted March 21, 2015 I think either would be fine, but I've never been there. What do you recommend? We plan on visiting "the bean" and doing a little other sightseeing. And of course making our way to Wrigley on the 3rd.
AaronJB Posted March 21, 2015 Report Posted March 21, 2015 The Bean/Millennium Park is a well-known attraction, but you'll probably not spend that much time there. The Art Institute a block away is definitely well-worth spending a while at. Navy Pier isn't something I recommend, but they are starting to make some welcome changes. Lincoln Park Zoo is still - remarkably - free and well worth a visit. I'm familiar with the area and would be happy to offer suggestions if you let me know more about what you like/dislike. I do usually recommend staying North of the river (River North-NMA) from the standpoint of there's more going on at night. The Millennium Park-Loop-GP area's West and South portions are quiet at night, as they're fairly office-heavy. However, these dates are fairly expensive and I think you may have difficulty getting a 4* in the River North-NMA area at $150 or under, although you can certainly try. $150 or under is more likely in the Millennium Park-Loop-GP area. If you want to start low, I think you could work up from $100 (not likely to be successful, but worth trying) by $5's using re-bidding. Please let us know if you have any questions *before* starting to bid. kkettner23 Posted March 26, 2015 Author Report Posted March 26, 2015 Ok, I'm not having a whole lot of luck finding something that we're comfortable spending. What are honest thoughts about staying in the north suburbs? We don't mind a bit of a commute into Wrigleyville and downtown, being we'll only really be needing to take public transportation into the city for one day (being we have such a short stay). Any particular hotels in the North suburbs that you recommend and would be easy access to transportation available to both downtown and Wrigley? Thanks so much for the help!
AaronJB Posted March 26, 2015 Report Posted March 26, 2015 4* Northbrook-Glenview-Mt Prospect $61 (you may see a slightly different price). Restaurant, Pool, Indoor Pool, Fitness, Smoke Free, Hi-Speed Internet, Business, Laundry, Golf, Free Parking, Blind Accessible, Deaf Accessible, Travel Accessible, Room Accessible, Bathroom Accessible, Handicapped Parking, Roll-in Shower, Pet Friendly.-- This would be a possible match for the Renaissance North Shore. If this is the Renaissance, the walk-in entrance for the Chicago Botanic Garden (which is beautiful in early May, well worth seeing) is on the other side of the expressway. I don't know if it still does (or hours) but this property at least used to offer shuttle to nearby Metra stations. If not, it's an easy drive in one of two directions. The North suburbs are definitely a reasonable alternative if you're driving - if you're not driving though it's difficult to get around.
