I am looking at a PRICELINE EXPRESS deal in the North Michigan Ave - River North Area. It is $75 dollars for 2 nights, March 16-18. I was wondering which hotel it could be. The amenities are free internet, business center, fitness center, and restaurant!

The Felix, Raffaello, Hotel Chicago and W Lakeshore have been seen with this amenity set previously, but I'd guess the Felix is most likely.

I also see what may be the Sheraton for $92 on Hot.wire and the Thompson Chicago for $100 (you may see slightly different prices.) While unfortunately more expensive, I do think the Thompson would be a worthwhile upgrade over the Felix.  Would either of these be of interest? Let us know, or if you have questions on other listings.

Thank you for keeping us updated.

Is the Felix horrible? We are two young adults trying to take this trip on a budget. We could swing the Thompson if the cheaper options were just terrible. We truly do not want to be in our hotel other than to sleep those 2 nights. Also, what neighborhood would you suggest?

I am looking for a nice 4 star or above using the name your price tool. I would like to stay in the loop, but Michigan ave would be fine. I am trying to stay under $75. I would actually like to be under that, because on hotwire I can by a 4 star that is most likely the Felix. The reviews were not as great as I would like. Do you think I will be able to stay in the loop for $75 or below for those dates? When would be the best time to start the bidding?

I don't think the Felix is horrible as much as it's one of the lesser 4* properties in the zone. It is in a terrific location - easy walk to Michigan Ave and River North. If you're going to just go there to sleep, it would probably be fine.

I'd guess that you could get a 4* in the Loop for $65-75, but you could start a tad lower ($55) and work up by $5 at a time using re-bidding.

Do keep in mind that parts of the Loop (especially the South and West portions) can be quiet at night. Let us know if this is acceptable or if you would still be interested in Michigan Ave. If you are going to be out late and spending a lot of time around Michigan Ave, it may be worth looking at some of the Hot.wire listings. Or if you want to risk possibly getting the Felix, you could try bidding for a 4* in the River North-NMA area and if you do wind up with it, at least you'd wind up with it for less than Hot.wire's price.

Let us know your thoughts and we would be happy to offer further suggestions.

I would not mind staying near Michigan ace. We are wanting to see the bean, Willis tower, and the other tourist traps. We will not have a car, so we will be relying on the l train to get around. Which neighborhood do you suggest?

The NMA area is - I'd say - preferable, but if you can get a moderately cheaper rate in the Loop it's worth considering. As for getting around, if the weather isn't great (although thankfully Chicago hasn't had a bad Winter so far as Chicago goes), you'll want to use public transit, but if the weather holds up, you'll quickly find Chicago to be highly walkable. In terms of the Willis Tower, the Hancock is not a bad alternative at all and it currently has a Groupon (https://www.groupon.com/deals/john-hancock-observatory-1) deal.

In terms of HOTWIRE, an odd note that I'm seeing today: there's a 3.5* in the Mag Mile-RN area for $101 when searching for 2 adults, w/Restaurant, Pool, Fitness, Hi-Speed Internet, Business.

This amenity set has been seen with the Doubletree Mag Mile, which is a nice hotel.

If I search for 2 adults and 2 children, I see the same listing for $101.

However:

If I search for 2 adults and 1 child, then I see a 3.5* in the Mag Mile-RN area w/Restaurant, Pool, Fitness, Hi-Speed Internet, Business for $70. Good, solid hotel and if it's the Doubletree, free Doubletree cookies. Within your budget and I think worth considering. Very nice location, too.

Please let us know what you decide and let us know if you have additional questions.

Thank you for being sooo helpful. I found the same listing you did, but it's saying 62 dollars! Could this still be the double tree? If not, what are the other possibilities!

Posted

The Doubletree is the only hotel that has been reported with this amenity set, so while there's always the chance that it's something else, that would be my guess. Additionally, given the oddity regarding pricing ($100+ for 2 adults and 2 adults/2 children, but 2 adults/1 child is much cheaper), I'd really recommend taking this while it's available especially if you're seeing it for $62.

The listing has straight 4.5/5's on the HOTWIRE customer rating on the detail page, so the underlying hotel certainly gets fine reviews.

Please keep us updated with what you decide.

I'm seeing this at $62 when searching for 2adults/2children... but at $100+ when searching for 4adults, so make sure you are inputting the correct number of adults/children and not grouping them together as adults. (i'm just speculating as to what could account for the different pricing)

Good luck and let us know how it goes.

Congrats on your success. :)

Nice win for this property - if you are just looking for a place to sleep and will be out most of the time, this couldn't be more perfect for that. Very nice, standard Doubletree in a great location.

There was a great Dominicks Grocery store on the opposite corner from this property, but that is being replaced by Whole Foods, which should be open by the time of your stay. Right nearby, there's also Yolk (http://www.yelp.com/biz/yolk-chicago-8), which is a popular breakfast spot.

Please let me know if you have any Chicago questions.

You have been SOOO much help. I can not thank you enough. If you have any suggestions for eating or site seeing please let me know. Also, any tips for getting around from our hotel would be awesome.

In terms of eating, let me know some likes/dislikes and I'd be happy to offer some recommendations nearby.

As for attractions, I'd say avoid Navy Pier, even though it's within an easy few block walk of your hotel.  It's expensive, not much is going on at this point in the year and it's generally a tourist trap. I'd much rather suggest going to Lincoln Park Zoo, which is a great zoo (and free.) You can combine that with nearby Old Town, walking through Lincoln Park (which has a great mix of shops/restaurants) and other things (the Chicago History Museum and the Notabert Nature Museum are right nearby the Zoo.) The Museum Campus is also recommended, although I'd recommend the Shedd and Field, but not really the Adler. The Art Institute is a must. Millennium Park is okay, but I don't get the appeal of the giant reflective metal bean. Still, it's easy to take a look at on the way to the Art Institute.

In terms of getting around, there are a number of buses that go up and down Michigan Ave, including the 151, which heads North and passes the zoo. Transitchicago.com is a complete look at bus and subway schedules and maps for downtown. The Grand Red Line station would be the closest to your hotel in terms of taking the subway. You can take the Red Line North to Fullerton and then walk East towards the Lake to get to the Zoo.

You could also walk to the Zoo - it's a great walk, but a long walk.
