I'd try to ask for a room not facing North - if there's any way you could get a room facing Michigan Ave (or East) would be best, even if in the non-upgraded/newer tower. Definitely check out the pool, which is one of the first public pools built on a higher floor. Also, while not right there, you may want to consider the Millennium Park parking lot instead in terms of cheaper parking. Let me know if you have any Chicago questions.
