Hotwire Hotel: 4* New York City (Midtown East) W New York

Hi,

we are traveling to NY for Thanksgiving and are already extremely excited.

We are staying from Nov 26 to Dec 2nd, so 6 nights.

Dates are not flexible, as the flight is already booked.

We are 2 couples, wanting 2 seperate rooms, or a big suite, where the rooms are seperate.

We would be very happy on a help with the hotel search. Since the Thanksgiving week is asking for some early wake-ups (Parade, Black Friday), our priority is a good location and to be close to a subway.

A hotel on the parade route would be amazing, but I think those are not affordable.

We are very happy for your location recommendations.

Budget should be around 200 Dollar per night, as for everyone, to save on the hotel would leave more for all the sightseeing :-).

It should be 4* hotels, unless you say also 3.5 Stars offers good hotels.

We are open for Hotwire and Priceline.

Thanks for your help in advance!

Welcome to BetterBidding!

Please keep all posts for the same stay in the same thread.

For some of the HOTWIRE hotels above I believe there are more amenities then what you have posted above as HOTWIRE has a new interface that does not show the complete set of amenities unless you click thru a few extra links.

If you repeat your search using our BiddingHelper.com tool... use the HOTWIRE EASY VIEW tab and then click the GREEN BUTTON next to this listing, do you see more amenities then what you have listed above? (NOTE: also make sure that you are selecting 2rooms when repeating your search)

HOWEVER, before identifying hotels, let's review whether PRICELINE or HOTWIRE is a better option for you...

Price.line is usually slightly cheaper than HOTWIRE but you need to be able to accept any hotel in the zone at the star rating (or higher) that you bid.

HOTWIRE gives you the ability to know a little more about the hotel (amenities, reviews, etc) which can also be used to help you guess the property that is being offered.

... what is more important to you for this stay, the lowest price OR the ability to guess the hotel you may likely receive before your purchase?

To give you a bit of a head-start (in case you need to consult the other couple as well), here are some of the better offers i'm currently seeing on HOTWIRE:

W New York for $171/nite

The Lexington New York City for $194/nite

TRYP Times Square South for $240/nite (not sure of your budget and/or if worth the extra money vs. the other hotels above)

Affinia Dumont (most likely) for $219/nite

Please use the PRICELINE and HOTWIRE links on the board to begin your travel purchases.

Let us know your thoughts/comments on the above and we will take it from there.

Thank you for your answer!!

The better quote is more important for us I think, as long as we do not need to have a too big of a set back regarding location/value.

The W New York and Lexington already look like a great option.

Again, we are very grateful, if you could tell us what you would go for, as we havent been there in a long time or ever :-).

The better rate is more important for us, but not if we need to walk 15 min every day to the subway station for example or have a bad room.

And the costs would be just slighty more.

Thanks again!

Personally i would go for the guessed Affinia Dumont simply because the Affinia has such a great reputation (again, and should this guess be wrong, you have the 'safety net' of it having excellent reviews by previous guests).

However, i understand about budget and between the W New York and The Lexington it is a tough call...

The W New York does have some small rooms and that is the biggest complaint about this hotel (although i do tend to like the style (and the beds) of the W brand. I admittedly don't know much about The Lexington, but in terms of location, they are nearly identical and only about a block or two away from each other.

Please use the PRICELINE and HOTWIRE links on the board to begin your travel purchases.

Let us know whatever you decide for this stay or how we can be of further help.

Would you think we would get a better deal on priceline?

As noted above, PRICELINE is a 'better' deal in the sense that it is usually a little cheaper than HOTWIRE, but you then need to be able to accept any hotel in the zone at the star rating (or higher that you bid)... whereas HOTWIRE is 'better' in the sense that you can take an educated guess as to which property you may receive before your purchase:

PRICELINE is usually slightly cheaper than HOTWIRE but you need to be able to accept any hotel in the zone at the star rating (or higher) that you bid.

HOTWIRE gives you the ability to know a little more about the hotel (amenities, reviews, etc) which can also be used to help you guess the property that is being offered.

... what is more important to you for this stay, the lowest price OR the ability to guess the hotel you may likely receive before your purchase?

So which is 'better' depends upon your needs for this trip and how you prioritize budget vs. getting a hotel that you think will best suit your needs.

If you want to try bidding on PRICELINE let us know your maximum bid and acceptable zones... if you want to try to target a specific property on HOTWIRE, let us know which of the above you would want and we will provide the details of which one we believe is that offer.

If we can get a 4* Hotel at a maximum of 160$ at priceline per night in the follwoing area, we would go for that.

-Midtown West

-Midtown East (or wa sthere also one hotel which you didnt recoommend)

-MSG

-ESBA

-CPS would also be great, but we do not want the Hudson Hotel and I think this is in there

If not, we would like to book the W New York. Could you please help me identify it?

The Warwick or NY Hilton Midtown was not in the offers right?

As you, we did like the Affinia Dumont better, but the price difference made us go for the W New York, which also sounds great.

Thanks so much again!!

In the MTE zone is the ONE UN which is a bit far east in the zone for some... it can be up to a 15 minute walk to the subway. Would this be acceptable? Let us know if we should include/exclude this zone from a bidding strategy.

If you're not willing to accept the Hudson hotel then we will exclude CPS from the bidding as there is no way to exclude it from the possibilities.

Then we would also prefer to leave the MTE out, as well as CPS.

With the W we have a really good alternative which we would then rather take.

Could you please also include the booking infos for the W, as I want to try and book the hotel right away,

In case the priceline is not successful.

I cant thank you enough for all your support!

So to confirm:

a 4* hotel in the MTW, MSG, or ESB zones with a maximum bid of $170/nite

If this is correct you can try as follows:

When bidding 4* in NYC you have TWO re-bid zones. If you're not familiar with re-bidding please read Priceline Re-Bidding Explained and feel free to ask questions and/or confirm your re-bid zones with the board before proceeding.

Select 4* MTW...

Bid $140, if rejected add re-bid zone...

Bid $145, if rejected add re-bid zone...

Bid $150, if rejected close browser and use this link to re-access PRICELINE...

Select 4* MSG...

Bid $140, if rejected add re-bid zone...

Bid $145, if rejected add re-bid zone...

Select 4* ESB...

Bid $160, if rejected add re-bid zone...

Bid $163, if rejected close browser and use this link to re-access PRICELINE...

Select 4* MTW, MSG, ESB...

Bid $165, if rejected add re-bid zone...

Bid $168, if rejected add re-bid zone...

Bid $170

If the above is rejected you can then look towards the HOTWIRE offer believed to be the W New York. However, PLEASE do the following to conduct your search:

1) search HOTWIRE

2) change the country code on the top right to US/Canada adn the currency to USD

3) close that browser

4) repeat your search in a new browser

5) change the currency code to whatever you'd like to purchase in while keeping the country code set to US/Canada

6) complete your purchase on the US version of their site (as this ensures we receive proper credit)

Within your search you should see a 4* Boutique hotel in the MTE zone for ~$170 (your price may differ slightly) with:

Pet Friendly

Boutique

Fitness

Restaurant

Business

Laundry

Hi-Speed Internet

Spa

... this would likely be a match for the W New York

Any questions feel free to ask.

Congratulations on your success!

Glad to see you received the hotel you were hoping for and that you're pleased with the outcome.

You're also near my often recommended Ess-A-Bagel (Third Ave at 51st St) which has one of the best bagels in the city, makes for a nice, and relatively inexpensive, breakfast among local NYers.

Thank you for sharing your win with the board.

Thank you, we cant wait for those bagels :-)!!

If I might be so bold, we would really be very thankful for one more recommendation.

We are looking for a restaurant where we can have a traditional, fantastic Thanksgiving menu.

Turkey, stuffing, gravy, the full deal :-). Do you know something? Thanks again!!!

Link to comment

Just about every non-ethnic restaurant (ie- not chinese, italian, mexican, etc) will offer a traditional thanksgiving dinner (turkey, gravy, mashed potatoes) on their 'specials' menu on Thanksgiving.

Given this is a 'one a year' special menu item at many restaurants i don't have a specific recommendation for this meal, although most 'diners' will have this as an 'everyday' item on their menu.

As with most of your meals it will come down to price point and how much you want to spend (as eating out in NYC can get to be expensive, especially if adding drinks)
