Tazza7 Posted October 13, 2014 Report Posted October 13, 2014 Hello, We are a young couple visiting NY for the first time from 11th-15th December, and am a first time priceline user looking for some advice... 1) When's the best time to be looking - is it too early? 2) What bidding strategy would you recommend? Our budget is around $160/night. Flexible with location, but would prefer as central as possible 3) Is a 4* hotel for this budget unrealistic? Thank you in advance for your help Tamsin
thereuare Posted October 13, 2014 Report Posted October 13, 2014 Welcome to BetterBidding! Seasonally this is one of the more expensive weekends of the year due to the close of the holiday shopping season (the following weekend is a little too close to Xmas that it tends to be slower, even though it's still before the holiday). Are your plans flexible at all and you can come a week later than your current plans? If not, at current rates you'll likely need to compromise someplace... either budget, location, or star rating. If something like the 4* ONE UN (in the MTE zone) is option (this property is do-able but a bit far east in the zone, can be up to a 15 minute walk to the subway) then you're likely looking at $180-$200 for a 4* hotel. If you want a 4* more centrally located you're likely looking at the $200-$220 range... you can try for a 3.5* for less, but doing so may not save you much (if anything). Please use the PRICELINE and HOTWIRE links on the board to begin your travel purchases. Let us know your thoughts and how you'd like to proceed and we'll advise accordingly. Please use this HOTWIRE and these PRICELINE LINKS: HOTELS, CAR RENTALS, and AIRFARE to begin your travel purchases
Tazza7 Posted October 13, 2014 Author Report Posted October 13, 2014 Thanks for getting back so quickly, really appreciate it! We can't change our dates unfortunately, however we can be pretty flexible on everything else. We understand that it's an expensive time of year & so if our pricings are unrealistic then we will pay more! Same with distance, a walk of 15mins or so is fine. We don't need anything particularly fancy, just something comfortable and clean for us to sleep at night! Cheers, Tamsin
Tazza7 Posted October 13, 2014 Author Report Posted October 13, 2014 Having done a little bit of research on previous posts, i see that the Hudson is known to have notoriously small rooms, could you possibly confirm just how small they might be? As i said, we only need somewhere to sleep at night as will be spending our days exploring, but if we're not going to be able to move around the room, we might give CPS a miss.! As mentioned before, we don't mind a bit of a walk to places for the right price!
Romelle Posted October 13, 2014 Report Posted October 13, 2014 ....just how small they might be? I wasn't able to find actual room dimensions on the web, but there are lots of pictures. Many reviews on www.tripadvisor.com. It looks like maybe 3' on each side of the bed. More at the foot. No extra room in the bathroom, but I did see tubs. The rooms have attractive dark paneling. AaronJB Posted October 13, 2014 Report Posted October 13, 2014 I believe rooms at the Hudson are around 130-140 sq ft. Rooms in NYC in general are small, but the Hudson's rooms are particularly small. Thank you for using the board's HOTWIRE or PRICELINE links to start your purchases and searches.
Tazza7 Posted October 13, 2014 Author Report Posted October 13, 2014 Cheers, think we'll be okay with a small room to be honest, we won't be spending much time in the room! Any bidding strategies? Are we simply too early for the minute and should try nearer the trip? We'd be happy with any location except Brooklyn, Long Island, Morningside Heights and Queensborough Bridge. Thanks again.
thereuare Posted October 14, 2014 Report Posted October 14, 2014 Cheers, think we'll be okay with a small room to be honest, we won't be spending much time in the room!True... but before you also mention comfortable and being able to move around in the room... the Hudson doesn't qualify for either, imo. However, it's your stay and you know your needs best. We'd be happy with any location except Brooklyn, Long Island, Morningside Heights and Queensborough Bridge. To avoid any confusion, please list the zones that you are willing to accept (rather than the ones that you are not willing to accept) Also, we will of course start lower, but please confirm that we can/should go up to $200/nite as i think that is realistically what you're looking at in terms of price at the moment. Tazza7 Posted October 14, 2014 Author Report Posted October 14, 2014 Cheers. Areas we'd be happy with: CA - Cheslea AreaESB HK - Hell's KitchenMSGMTEMTWTSIf we don't get anywhere with those areas we will consider adding others! Yep $200 will be fine :) We are also willing to wait a month or so if that will gain us better results!
thereuare Posted October 14, 2014 Report Posted October 14, 2014 There is no way to know if prices will come down, or move even higher, between now and your stay... but as noted above, on a seasonal basis this is historically one of the most expensive weekends on account of the Christmas holiday. When bidding 4* in NYC you have TWO re-bid zones. If you're not familiar with re-bidding please read Priceline Re-Bidding Explained and feel free to ask questions and/or confirm your re-bid zones with the board before proceeding.
