Sam Damon Posted August 5, 2014 Report Posted August 5, 2014 Not quite sure which part of NYC to bid on. Is it better to stay outside the city and take my chances with either NJT or Metro-North? I'm open to the board for suggestions & bid strategies. Thanks.
thereuare Posted August 5, 2014 Report Posted August 5, 2014 Is it better to stay outside the city and take my chances with either NJT or Metro-North?The only reason to do this would be if NYC was beyond your budget... what is your maximum budget per nite for this trip? Sam Damon Posted August 5, 2014 Author Report Posted August 5, 2014 The only reason to do this would be if NYC was beyond your budget... what is your maximum budget per nite for this trip? Just used the PRICELINE link to get a ballpark idea of what's available for how much. Also used the HOTWIRE link to put me on the cluetrain. Looks like the $100 hotel of my youth has now turned into the $150-$200/per night hotel of today. Thinking now of staying in Rockville Centre area or possibly Queens now, as I had been thinking in the $100 range, but may have to go higher, based on reality, haha.
thereuare Posted August 6, 2014 Report Posted August 6, 2014 Rockville Centre would be a hike with your commute to NYC likely adding significantly to your daily expense and/or consuming a great deal of your limited time in NYC. I think you could likely get a nice 4* hotel in Downtown Manhattan for ~$150/nite and this would be the best 'bang for your buck' that i'm currently seeing. If this is accept, let us know all acceptable zones, and your maximum bid, and we will suggest a strategy for you to follow. Sam Damon Posted August 7, 2014 Author Report Posted August 7, 2014 Thanks for getting back to me on this. What I'm looking for, as you noted, was the best bang for the buck. I've got to crunch some numbers, as I'd rather come into NYC via Penn Station if I can help it. I'll be back in a day or two.
Sam Damon Posted August 23, 2014 Author Report Posted August 23, 2014 Just wanted to close this thread out -- I looked at my budget & concluded I need to save a bit more before heading to NYC. Thanks for your help, and I'll keep you folks in mind when I head out on trips.
thereuare Posted August 23, 2014 Report Posted August 23, 2014 Thanks for closing this thread with your decision. Not sure how long into the future you're looking to postpone this trip, but the weekend after Thanksgiving is often some of the least expensive dates of the busy Fall season, as well as the weekend before Christmas. Also, if you can wait until January or February, these months have some of the cheapest rates of the year in NYC (but it can also be fairly cold).
