CousinKAP1 Posted August 4, 2014 Report Posted August 4, 2014 Looking for a 4 star or better. Looking to impress the GF without breaking the bank Any suggestions on where to bid or which express deal to buy? I'm thinking midtown east. The area doesnt matter too much to me prefer to stay away from TS. Just looking for something nice for a great price. or something great with a nice price :) Please suggest away. and thanks in advance
thereuare Posted August 4, 2014 Report Posted August 4, 2014 Welcome to BetterBidding! If you don't mind staying downtown, HOTWIRE has what looks to be the Doubletree Financial District for $135/nite.... or in Midtown the W New York for $166/nite. PRICELINE EXPRESS has a 4* hotel in the ESB zone with only Restaurant and Business Center amenities showing for $178/nite (code METRO6 takes an extra 5% OFF) and while i don't know which hotel this one may be, it does have a minimum 8.0/10.0 rating from previous PRICELINE guests, which is pretty good. CousinKAP1 Posted August 4, 2014 Author Report Posted August 4, 2014 I was looking at the W deal. Between the 2, which one do you recommend? What would be your best guess on the PRICELINE EXPRESS hotel? Do you suggest I bid on PRICELINE? Sorry for all the questions but I have been following your board for years and it's so helpful. thanks for the help
AaronJB Posted August 4, 2014 Report Posted August 4, 2014 Personally, out of the two, I'd go for the W, with a better location and if you guys like hip/trendy hotels, that would be further plus in that direction. If you bid you have to be willing to accept any hotel in the zone at the star rating chosen. If you want to try to impress/get something that you two may like more, bidding presents more of a risk. Unfortunately, I don't have a guess on the PRICELINE EXPRESS Deals listing, as restaurant and business center are common to many/most of the properties in the zone. What would be your desired max budget per night for this stay?
CousinKAP1 Posted August 4, 2014 Author Report Posted August 4, 2014 We have the same line of thinking. I appreciate your help. I would like to stay at under $200 a night. Are there any more hotels in this price range you can recommend?
thereuare Posted August 4, 2014 Report Posted August 4, 2014 The location of the W New York is good and you'll be near by often recommended Ess-A-Bagel for breakfast each day... the only issue i'm aware of at the W New York is that many of the rooms are on the small side (which is common for NYC). There is also the 3.5* MTE Boutique property for $169/nite which i'm guessing is the Club Quarters Grand Central (Restaurant, Fitness, Smoke Free, Free Internet, Business, Laundry) which doesn't have the name recognition of the W Hotel, but does get good reviews. If you're looking to impress i would go for the 4.5* MTE property for $177/nite (Restaurant, Fitness, Hi-Speed Internet, Business, Laundry, Spa, Blind Accessible, Deaf Accessible, Travel Accessible, Room Accessible, Bathroom Accessible, Wheelchair Accessible) which is also 4.5/5.0 TA rated and likely The New York Palace. CousinKAP1 Posted August 4, 2014 Author Report Posted August 4, 2014 The New york Palace looks awesome. Is it on HOTWIRE or PRICELINE?
AaronJB Posted August 4, 2014 Report Posted August 4, 2014 I'm seeing a 4.5* on HOTWIRE in MTE w: Fitness Restaurant Business Laundry Hi-Speed Internet Spa Blind Accessible Deaf Accessible Travel Accessible Room Accessible Wheelchair Accessible Bathroom Accessible Which would be a match for the NY Palace. Unfortunately, it's showing for me at $206. I'm seeing a 4.5* in MTE on PRICELINE EXPRESS (coupon code METRO6 takes an additional 5% off that price.) with Pets Allowed, Restaurant, Fitness, Business. I'd guess the Hyatt Lex 48 or Omni Berkshire would be possibilities in this case. I'm also seeing OneUN for $176 on HOTWIRE (that property is at the far E border of MTE so it's not the most ultra convenient, but it gets very good reviews and, given where it is, there is a chance that you may get a decent view.) I'm also seeing what may be the Refinery for $180 - but that's a real guess and the listing in question may be something else, I'm also seeing what may be the Flatiron for $188, but at that point, I think the potential NY Palace would be a worthwhile upgrade. Let us know if you have any questions at all before booking. Thank you for using the board's HOTWIRE or PRICELINE links to start your purchases and searches.
CousinKAP1 Posted August 4, 2014 Author Report Posted August 4, 2014 It think the palace went up. I wasn't sure which site was offering that particular hotel. Would you suggest UN or the W?
thereuare Posted August 5, 2014 Report Posted August 5, 2014 What i believe to be The Palace is now $202/nite on HOTWIRE with: Fitness Restaurant Business Laundry Hi-Speed Internet Spa Blind Accessible Deaf Accessible Travel Accessible Room Accessible Wheelchair Accessible Bathroom Accessible Of the ONE UN or the W New York i would take the W New York based upon location. Thanks for using the PRICELINE and HOTWIRE links on the board. Let us know what you decide and how it goes or if we can be of further help. CousinKAP1 Posted August 5, 2014 Author Report Posted August 5, 2014 Looks like im back to square one. In your experience, do you think the price for the palace would drop or should I just get the W?
AaronJB Posted August 5, 2014 Report Posted August 5, 2014 A few thoughts: If you like trendy, hip boutiques, the W would be recommended. Rooms are small, but rooms in NYC are in general. If trendy boutiques are not of interest (while I like the W properties, I can understand that they are not going to be everyone's cup of tea), then I'd go with the Palace. I would almost think of the difference between the W and the Palace (which is around $35) as like paying for a room upgrade. If that's of interest, the Palace is compelling - and certainly gets great reviews. There is no way to know if rates will drop - they can very easily go higher or the listing you are interested in may just go away completely. NYC traffic is high and what Hot.wire is offering you can change quickly (and not always for the better/cheaper.) CousinKAP1 Posted August 5, 2014 Author Report Posted August 5, 2014 for the W is it the Boutique hotel for 165 MTE?
AaronJB Posted August 5, 2014 Report Posted August 5, 2014 I was seeing a $165 MTE boutique with amenities that matched the W for these dates when searching earlier this morning, but I'm not seeing it when searching for these dates a minute ago. Are you still seeing it appear? Thank you for using the board's HOTWIRE or PRICELINE links to start your purchases and searches.
CousinKAP1 Posted August 5, 2014 Author Report Posted August 5, 2014 Thanks for everyone's help. I purchased it using the HOTWIRE link here and you were correct it was the W on Lexington. It disappeared after I purchased it. Out of curiosity what is your guess on the $169 in MTE. It has an indoor pool.
AaronJB Posted August 5, 2014 Report Posted August 5, 2014 Congrats on your success. :) Very good deal for this MTE property and hope you are looking forward to your stay. The hotel may say no to requests, but I think it's worth trying to write and explain that it's a special situation, you're trying to impress and that anything that they could do would be greatly appreciated. Thank you for sharing your win and please use the site's PRICELINE or HOTWIRE links to start your purchases and searches. Enjoy your stay.
CousinKAP1 Posted August 5, 2014 Author Report Posted August 5, 2014 Excellent suggestion. Who should I email?
AaronJB Posted August 5, 2014 Report Posted August 5, 2014 The email listed on the reservations page of the hotel website is wnewyorkreservations{AT}whotels.com. Or you could try giving them a call and explaining the situation. Either way, good luck and hopefully they can do something/offer some options.
thereuare Posted August 5, 2014 Report Posted August 5, 2014 You're also near my often recommended Ess-A-Bagel (Third Ave at 51st St) which has one of the best bagels in the city, makes for a nice, and relatively inexpensive, breakfast among local NYers (and if your insider knowledge of NYC bagel shops doesn't impress her she doesn't deserve you :P ). CousinKAP1 Posted August 5, 2014 Author Report Posted August 5, 2014 I meant the factory by Sound Factory. Nothing like getting fresh bagels at 4a.m.
thereuare Posted August 5, 2014 Report Posted August 5, 2014 In the city that never sleeps a lot can change in 4 years... the H&H Bagels that you are referring to has closed. Please use this HOTWIRE and these PRICELINE LINKS: HOTELS, CAR RENTALS, and AIRFARE to begin your travel purchases

thereuare Posted August 6, 2014 Report Posted August 6, 2014 If you're a bagel fan then this place is worth a visit as well if you're in the area (don't be discouraged by the name): Best Bagel and Coffee 225 W 35th St (north side of the street between 7th and 8th Avenues) Please use this HOTWIRE and these PRICELINE LINKS: HOTELS, CAR RENTALS, and AIRFARE to begin your travel purchases
