Flexible on location, I just wanted to maximize value. It turned out to be much better to split the stay. The Langham (which I was sure about thanks to BB's lists) was only a few bucks more than the 4*s available, so that was really a good deal. I'll submit my July 4th hotel win separately (I hope that's right) even though it's the same "trip". I did use your HOTWIRE links to search and to book -- thanks folks, you helped me save a big bundle this time.
