sgray Posted July 4, 2014 Author Report Posted July 4, 2014 So, this is getting interesting... I am familiar with Hotwire's listings where it shows the estimated resort fees for hotels that charge resort fees. This particular listing on Hotwire showed NO resort fee (have screen shots). What is odd, is that this hotel says they normally charge a resort fee. I contacted HOTWIRE by phone BEFORE confirming the booking and recorded the phone call. They confirmed NO resort fee and stated that if the hotel told me otherwise, that they (hotwire) would have to "speak with the hotel about that." Having been through bullsh** before, I clearly asked if I would be refunded in the case of the hotel not honoring the price as-listed. The rep clearly stated "yes." Again, a recorded phone call. I contacted the HOTEL by email AFTER booking and they did not respond after the promised 48-hour timeframe on their website. So I called their customer service this evening (recorded phone call) and their response was that I would, indeed, be charged a resort fee, regardless of what Hotwire says. They said my only other option was to speak to the hotel manager, which I may do, but I feel that since Hotwire is who sold me the reservation, that Hotwire should be the ones to resolve this and provide written confirmation to me. I emailed HOT.WIRE customer service just now to begin that process. Have any of you ever run into this before? If so, please share your success tips. One thing is for sure: I will NOT be paying a resort fee that wasn't in the contract, and if Hotwire/Silver Sevens does not honor their agreement, I WILL be refunded 100%, at minimum. My position is that they are responsible for disclosing this information at the time of booking. Given that I have screen shots showing this for other hotels on Hotwire, that shouldn't be hard to prove. I don't forsee a tough battle given that I have everything recorded in screen shots and audio files from calling customer service. I still have a backup reservation that hasn't been canceled yet and I have a few weeks until my visit.
thereuare Posted July 4, 2014 Report Posted July 4, 2014 While HOTWIRE does show whether the hotel has a resort fee for most of their properties, they don't do so for every property (policies may have recently changed or not provided the information from the hotel). During check-out, next to the CONFIRM PAYMENT button HOTWIRE discloses: You'll pay the hotel directly for additional charges, like room service or resort fees. I'd try to work it out with HOTWIRE and see if you can come to some sort of compromise. Good luck. sgray Posted July 4, 2014 Author Report Posted July 4, 2014 I saw that one-liner on the confirmation page *following* payment, which interestingly is NOT included in the same confirmation email. My argument is that they 1) do not disclose the property to you so that you can research in advance, and 2) I do not believe that such a contract would be enforceable given a) the unknown yes/no/$amount on resort fee and B) the fact that they only show for *some* properties. It would seem to me that Hotwire could get into trouble by knowingly not disclosing on some properties...almost as a bait-and-switch tactic, you know? The recorded phone call I have with the HOTWIRE rep, stating that there was NO resort fee for that reference #/property should be enough to hold them accountable, but with the screenshots added to that, I can't see why they would continue to try and defend themselves. The current status is HOTWIRE is NOT helping me, other than sending me useless emails that go in circles. I was able to reach the HOTEL manager and she is reviewing the documents and screenshots I sent her. My hope is that they will just put something in writing and send back to me, waiving the resort fee. I realize that we're not talking about a significant amount of money here, but my position is that if people don't hold these companies accountable for their actions, then they will continue to screw people, you know? In any event, I have some time to deal with this and have not canceled my other backup reservation.
