heismypossum Posted June 23, 2014 Report Posted June 23, 2014 Hello, I've been using Price.line's NYOP option for a long time now, but seem stuck on this one. I was being very conservative and bid up to $95 on a 3.5 star hotel. I'm willing to stay in any of the following: Central Park South Empire State Area Hell's Kitchen Madison Square Garden Midtown East Midtown West Times Square Theatre District I didn't get any bites on a bid. I don't really want to go down to a 3-star, since the quality drop seems significant. There are several 3-star hotels in these areas that get terrible reviews, and Price.line doesn't guarantee a hotel rating. I've seen winning bids for around this price on the following forums: http://www.betterbidding.com/index.php?showtopic=197711 http://www.betterbidding.com/index.php?showtopic=197263 3 Questions: 1) Did the dates at the links above just happen to be better prices? 2) Would waiting until closer to the date help or hurt? 3) Any other tips for a successful bid?
AaronJB Posted June 23, 2014 Report Posted June 23, 2014 Welcome to Betterbidding. :)Prices vary significantly from day-to-day in NYC and rates are also seasonal to a large degree. You really don't see under $100 that commonly aside from the slowest period of the year (January to March). These dates aren't astronomical as NYC goes, but they are unfortunately a bit on the high side. I think you're likely looking at more in the $135-150 area for a 3.5* in midtown for these date/s. There is no way to know if rates will come down closer to the stay, but as rates have gone up in recent years with demand, there have been plenty of instances where rates continued higher as the dates got closer. Thank you for using the board's HOTWIRE or PRICELINE links to start your purchases and searches.
heismypossum Posted June 23, 2014 Author Report Posted June 23, 2014 Ah ok. I wasn't sure if, as they have close to the date, the prices would decline since they may have last-minute open rooms.
AaronJB Posted June 23, 2014 Report Posted June 23, 2014 There is no guarantee that they will decline closer to the date. Given the increased demand in recent years, there has been more in the way of people who try to wait to see if rates go down, then come back to find that that PRICELINE Express listing that they had seen or HOTWIRE listing is now no longer available/something less desirable and is more expensive. There is no way to know for sure, but with demand being what it is, waiting until the last minute is a risk that may or may not pay off. You can also use our new service, RateDrop.com to get alerts on HOTWIRE or PRICELINE Express listings, as well as regular rates. heismypossum Posted June 24, 2014 Author Report Posted June 24, 2014 I attempted all the way up to $140, and still nothing. There's a 4* hotel on Express deals for $157. I'm thinking I can't really be off by much. I'm trying to narrow down the express deals, so can I get a second opinion? The express deal for $157 in NYC for July 18th-20th is a 4* hotel in midtown east, featuring free internet, business center, fitness center, and a restaurant. It also has a rating of 7.0 or better. I'm almost sure I know which one it is, as it seems that only one has just those amenities (and not something extra like an 8.0 rating or pet friendly). It is also the most reasonable discount in terms of price (I don't expect something listed for $400 a night to go down to $157). If somebody could name what you think it is, hopefully it'll match what I believe it is referring to.
thereuare Posted June 24, 2014 Report Posted June 24, 2014 The Lexington New York City would be my best guess for this PRICELINE EXPRESS MTE property. Please use the PRICELINE and HOTWIRE links on the board to begin your travel purchases. Let us know how it goes or if we can be of further help. Please use this HOTWIRE and these PRICELINE LINKS: HOTELS, CAR RENTALS, and AIRFARE to begin your travel purchases
heismypossum Posted June 24, 2014 Author Report Posted June 24, 2014 Perfect. That's exactly what I thought as well. I'm going to go off the board a little bit and give them a call to see if they will price match it without booking through Priceline.
AaronJB Posted June 24, 2014 Report Posted June 24, 2014 You can give it a try but they are most likely going to say no. Thank you for using the board's HOTWIRE or PRICELINE links to start your purchases and searches.
heismypossum Posted June 27, 2014 Author Report Posted June 27, 2014 After a lot of bidding at every $5 amount up to $135, I went for $6 over. The bid was for East Midtown and the Empire State Building. This was definitely not the hotel I was expecting, but I'm very excited!
AaronJB Posted June 27, 2014 Report Posted June 27, 2014 Congrats on your success. :) Awesome win for this property, which hasn't been reported to the board as a win in quite a while. Plus, free breakfast. Thank you for sharing your win and please use the site's PRICELINE or HOTWIRE links to start your purchases and searches. Enjoy your stay.
