PhilHammond4 Posted June 15, 2014 Report Posted June 15, 2014 I am worried about getting a twin bed.I am also taking the red eye in, and I don't mind waiting for our room, but I don't want to book a hotel that doesn't like priceline customers.I love new york and am happy to explore any area.Is there a forum that lets us see a 3* versus a 4* hotel?Would love to spend $130 plus taxes (net $150ish) for a room in the below areas:MTWMTETSChelseaESBMSGUS-EVSOHOUESUWS(is there nothing in Greenwich Village?)
PhilHammond4 Posted June 15, 2014 Author Report Posted June 15, 2014 I am 6'5" and want to be sure that I get at least a queen bed.I am also coming in on the red eye, so I want to be sure I don't get a hotel that doesn't like Priceline customers. I don't mind storing my luggage while I wait for a room. I have found the list of hotels by category (thank you).I think 3.5*s is plenty though I'd prefer to get lucky on a 4.5*. We will be out most of the day.I am hoping to spend $130 wo tax ($150 w tax) per night. I am happy in any of these areas.MTWMTETSChelseaESBMSGUS-EVSOHOUESUWS Any area that I should avoid? I also looked on Hotwire (I clicked the link that you sent),and saw a 4.5* for 185 in the ESB area (95% recommended)and a 4* in the MSG area for 153 (70% recommended)I am open to suggestions. Thanks
AaronJB Posted June 15, 2014 Report Posted June 15, 2014 Welcome to Betterbidding. :) There is the slight risk of a twin in NYC, but at the opposite end, King beds are a rarity and usually an upgrade when available. The most likely result is something in the middle (full, queen.) There's no way to guarantee bed type when bidding or buying through HOTWIRE (although HOTWIRE has a bed choice option that can appear with listings, it's rarely ever seen.) PRICELINE Express does sometimes offer bed choice (you'll see a bed choice icon with the listing, then when you click you'll see options on the next page), but anything that is an upgrade is going to be additional cost, including bed type. There is no guarantee in terms of avoiding a hotel that doesn't treat PRICELINE customers well, but most certainly do although I wouldn't expect upgrades or changes to room assignment, especially in NYC. I wouldn't go with UWS or UES, just from the standpoint of that they are large zones and you could wind up high up in the zone. Central Park South is problematic at the 4* level from the standpoint of the Hudson Hotel, which has very small rooms, even by NYC standards. In MTE, OneUN is at the far E border of the zone. Not a bad hotel, but simply out of the way. There may be others that may not appeal to someone and may appeal to someone else (style, etc.) Based on the rates that I'm seeing, $130 w/o tax is going to be unlikely in most areas - it may be enough for the MSG area. Otherwise, for the rest of midtown, $130 is likely not that far off. I'd guess the 4* on HOTWIRE in MSG is likely the Wyndham New Yorker and the 4.5* in ESB is likely the St Giles the Tuscany (which was previously the W Tuscany.) Let us know how you'd like to proceed and we will advise accordingly. Thank you for using the board's HOTWIRE or PRICELINE links to start your purchases and searches.
PhilHammond4 Posted June 15, 2014 Author Report Posted June 15, 2014 I would like to make a bid today. If I end up paying a little more for a much nicer room I would be happy.I would like the best strategy to make sure I end up w a queen size bed, as the only way I would be unhappy with the experience is if I couldn't fit in the bed. Thanks
AaronJB Posted June 15, 2014 Report Posted June 15, 2014 There is no strategy to bid and wind up with a particular bed type. There's no guarantee of specific bedding. If you try to bid higher to get a particular hotel, you could easily overbid for a hotel you would have won for less anyways. As noted above, if bed type is a must, I'd look at pl Express for a listing with "bed choice" and look to see if a larger bed is one of the options. Thank you for using the board's HOTWIRE or PRICELINE links to start your purchases and searches.
PhilHammond4 Posted June 16, 2014 Author Report Posted June 16, 2014 I seem to be having trouble completing my messages. I bid low twice and then got some alternatives from Priceline.Express (175 4 Star ME Guest rating 7 pick my bed, and 180 3.5 star ME Guest rating 8 pick my bed) If I can get a 4* hotel for 140 or less, I am going to try for that. I imagine that I'll be able to work something out if I get a double(especially considering how much I'd be saving). Is there a better area to pick if I want to not get a double or are doubles pretty standard (I know that there are no guarantees, just looking for advice)? I really don't mind walking. I love walking around NY (even if I have to change shirts 3 times a day) and seeing new neighborhoods. It also looks like the UN Plaza has no worse than 2 doubles, so walking there would be fine.
thereuare Posted June 16, 2014 Report Posted June 16, 2014 I bid low twice and then got some alternatives from PRICELINE EXPRESSWhat star rating, zones, and bid amounts did you try which were rejected? If bidding up to $140 for a 4* hotel which zones are acceptable? Please use the PRICELINE and HOTWIRE links on the board to begin your travel purchases. PhilHammond4 Posted June 16, 2014 Author Report Posted June 16, 2014 I bid 145 for a 4.5* in ME or MW, and then 115 for a 3.5 or better in ME or MW just to see if I got lucky.140 for a 4* would be great. 160 for a 4.5 would also be great. The Millienium UN Plaza doesn't appear to have worse then 2 double beds, and I like walking around new york. The Royalton also doesn't appear to have worse than queen beds. Thanks for all the help, I know that a bed size strategy isn't the norm (and I will be fine if I don't get the bigger bed, just trying to maximize the odds of a big bed).
thereuare Posted June 16, 2014 Report Posted June 16, 2014 The best deal at the moment would appear to be the 4* PRICELINE EXPRESS offer in the MSG zone for $150/nite, less the additional 5% OFF discount code and link in my signature, bringing this down to $142/nite: Pets Allowed Restaurant Business Center Fitness Center ... these are common amenities for NYC, but my guess for this one would be the Wyndham New Yorker Hotel. Would this work for your needs... or if you want to try bidding please confirm which zone(s) you'd like to bid (and if we should use $142/nite as your maximum bid as you would sooner take this PRICELINE EXPRESS should your bidding fail?) thereuare Posted June 18, 2014 Report Posted June 18, 2014 Should we lower your maximum bid to $142/nite since you could purchase the PRICELINE EXPRESS property above for that price? PhilHammond4 Posted June 18, 2014 Author Report Posted June 18, 2014 I am open to bidding 140 for a 4*.Last night I went up to 161 for a 4.5* in SoHo or Midtown West, because the hotels all looked good, and had no worse than a queen size bed.If I am under 200, I am OK.I am enjoying the bidding experience. We've been to NY almost every year for the last 12 years, and it's my first tie trying bidding.

PhilHammond4 Posted June 19, 2014 Author Report Posted June 19, 2014 I have got "thank you for your patience, we're still looking a couple of times", but no win.I didn't include upper west side, because the reviews of empire hotel made it seem like a bad fit.I included HK, because I would have loved to get Ink48.Do you think I should split nights to get a business hotel for the weekend? Is there a better couple of nights to get a 4.5*?I will try again this week end. There is a 4* in MSG with no guest rating and dogs allowed for 150 on Priceline.
thereuare Posted June 19, 2014 Report Posted June 19, 2014 Do you think I should split nights to get a business hotel for the weekend? What do you mean by a 'business hotel'? What exactly is it that you're looking for from a hotel that the (guessed) Wyndham New Yorker is 'missing'? Is there a better couple of nights to get a 4.5*?Not at the $150 price point. Also, to clarify, you bid the above at the 4* level up to $150? (and included all zones, except removing UWS and replacing it with HK) There is a 4* in MSG with no guest rating and dogs allowed for 150 on Priceline. Is that the only amenity listed or is there a longer list and it's the same property as referenced above: The best deal at the moment would appear to be the 4* PRICELINE EXPRESS offer in the MSG zone for $150/nite, less the additional 5% OFF discount code and link in my signature, bringing this down to $142/nite: Pets Allowed Restaurant Business Center Fitness Center ... these are common amenities for NYC, but my guess for this one would be the Wyndham New Yorker Hotel. PhilHammond4 Posted June 19, 2014 Author Report Posted June 19, 2014 I went up to 141 in the areas that you listed except UWS.I was wondering if hotels that catered to business travelers would have a better deal on the weekend. If I could save $20 a night be spending wend and thurs in one hotel and fri and sat in another, it might be worth moving.I am going to try again tmw and go higher for soho Chelsea and HK. I like those hotels more from the listings you guys have. Also, are there no EV hotels on Priceline? I don't think there are any on the hotel listing page. Thanks again
AaronJB Posted June 19, 2014 Report Posted June 19, 2014 What is an EV hotel? Thank you for using the board's HOTWIRE or PRICELINE links to start your purchases and searches.
thereuare Posted June 20, 2014 Report Posted June 20, 2014 I'm assuming EV = East Village The PRICELINE zones in NYC were recently sub-divided and we have not yet had any hotels reported to the board in the East Village zone. There are not many hotels in this part of NYC, but there are property(s) that PRICELINE has contracts with in this zone given that they offer bidding. Be sure to read the comments at the top of the Priceline Hotel List. You can try SPLITTING YOUR PRICELINE BID, but i'm doubtful that you're going to do any/much better than the $150 ($143 after current discount link in my signature). If you search PRICELINE EXPRESS for the first two nites of your stay the best rate for a 4* is a $165/nite in the UWS zone (which you're not willing to bid anyway)... and the best 4* for the second two nites of your stay is $136/nite in the Downtown zone (a lesser location than midtown). So even if you were to get these two prices, it would be the same as purchasing all 4 nites at the $150 MSG zone hotel, plus you'd get the benefit of a better location and not needing to change properties mid-trip. What exactly is it that you're looking for from a hotel that the (guessed) Wyndham New Yorker is 'missing'???? If you're looking for a different option and willing to pay more, HOTWIRE currently has a 4.5* hotel in the ESB zone for $188/nite with a 4.5/5.0 TA rating and these amenities: Fitness, Free Internet, Hi-Speed Internet, Business, Laundry. My guess for this property would be the St. Giles - The Tuscany which gets very good reviews, but is more than your current budget. PhilHammond4 Posted June 20, 2014 Author Report Posted June 20, 2014 I went to 151 (because I like palindromes not rum) and struck out.I looked on Hotwire as suggested and found a Empire State Building Hotel with the following description3*, Suite, Business Center, Fitness Center, Kitchenette, Self Service Laundry. From your list, http://www.betterbidding.com/index.php?app=hotel_lists&tid=88, I think it's Murray Hill Easy suites.Am I right?
PhilHammond4 Posted June 20, 2014 Author Report Posted June 20, 2014 Yes, on EV being East Village.By the way, I dropped my preferences to MTE, MTW and SoHo when I went 151.Looks like I can also get Wyndham New Yorker (4* w Golf among other things) for 156.I was also bidding up to 177 for 4.5* hotels in the same areas.
thereuare Posted June 20, 2014 Report Posted June 20, 2014 I'm not sure what new information you keep learning that has made the goal for this stay such a moving target, but at the moment a 4.5* will likely run you $200-$220/nite... a 4* in MTE, MTW or Soho will likely be in the $145-$165 range. As per above what appeared to be the Wyndham New Yorker was available for $143/nite (which is why the previous bidding strategy stopped at $140 as you could then have take the MSG property at $143) but rates for this property have increased over the last few days. PhilHammond4 Posted June 21, 2014 Author Report Posted June 21, 2014 My strategy has always been to maximize my odds of getting a queen or king bed.I think the hotels listed on your Hotel Lists as 4.5* are worth about $25 more to me per night then the 4* ones, so I keep trying both based on the prices that you gave.I am OK with bidding up to 190 a night, but would prefer to spend money on food and shows. Is there a discount code with Hotwire? I found this hotel:Empire State Building Hotel with the following description3*, Suite, Business Center, Fitness Center, Kitchenette, Self Service Laundry.85% Thumbs up
PhilHammond4 Posted June 21, 2014 Author Report Posted June 21, 2014 Thank you for all of your help.I was pretty sure of the Hotel, from the Hotel description page, and it sounds like a great fit for what I want. Thanks
PhilHammond4 Posted June 21, 2014 Author Report Posted June 21, 2014 I thought it would all appear in the post.I got Murray Hill East Suites for $141 a night.
yellowdog Posted June 21, 2014 Report Posted June 21, 2014 Thank you for sharing your result with the board. I believe there were likely more amenities then what you have posted above as HOT.WIRE has a new interface that does not show the complete set of amenities unless you click thru a few extra links. For future searches/bookings you can do the following to ensure you're seeing the complete list: 1) use the EASY VIEW tab of our Bidding.Helper and click the green 'See All Amenities' button OR 2) search HOT.WIRE (or use the HOT.WIRE tab at Bidding.Helper) and... · click the offer · on the next page click the BOOK NOW link · in the TRIP SUMMARY box click the 'See more' link at the end of the amenities Enjoy your stay. Please use the board's PRICELINE and HOTWIRE links to begin your purchases and searches Yellowdog.
