Hotwire Hotel: Maui Hotel

I am going to be looking for a hotel in Maui soon for end of August.  I want to stay for about 7 days, so would like to have a reasonably priced hotel.  

 

I thought about all inclusive and vacation packages but all of those seem to be highly inflated.

 

Do you think my best bet would be to book flight and hotel separately rather than package it together?

Usually booking airfare on your own and then using PRICELINE / HOTWIRE for a hotel is your cheapest route... have you done any bidding yet as discussed in your Priceline Maui Airfare thread?

Will this trip only take place if you're able to get a deal, or will you be heading to Hawaii regardless of ultimately cost?
