There are two cruise piers in San Juan... do you know which one you are embarking from?

What are the date(s) you need and what is your expected star rating and budget?

I don't know which one ~ Or how to find out :)  I know that we are cruising on Royal Caribbean if that helps?

We are looking to stay one night, Friday October 11 with a possible 4* at around $125'ish

Thank you for telling me about the sister-site.... I will check it out :)

The Royal Caribbean web site said they dock at the Pan American Pier, Isla Grande.  This is one of the choices on the Pre-Cruise web site thereuare mentioned.  It is just across the water from Old San Juan.   Zoom in on the map until the detail is clear.

The nearest 4* hotel is the Sheraton Puerto Rico.  While it is lovely, it is sort of isolated.  Some nice restaurants, but that is about it.  Old San Juan north just across the water has more of the tourist attractions and a number of hotels.  You might enjoy staying in Old San Juan where more of the tourist attractions are.  The Condado area has beautiful beach front hotels.

If you are PL bidding the Old San Juan - Condado zone, it includes Old San Juan, Condado, and the area of the Sheraton PR where the Pan Am Pier is.  About 5 miles the longest distance across.  So you might get any of the three areas.

The Hot.wire zone map is different.  One area is Old San Juan, and a second includes Condado, and the area of the Sheraton PR where the Pan Am Pier is.  However, it extends further east in Condado.

With Hot.wire, and to some extent with Priceline.Express, an educated guess can be supplied as to which hotel you might get if you post back with all the amenities and other details.

Since tourism is pretty much the main business there, it is pretty easy to move about.  Taxis are regulated with flat rates.  Not perfectly, but mostly.  The bus system does operate, and can be used, but it is tricky.  Hotels are used to questions about it though, and will give you detailed instructions.  There is a free trolley with several routes in the Old San Juan and Condado areas.  I think it was the Green Line that was the most scenic, going along the northern edge of Old San Juan.

If you're leaving from the PanAm Pier you'll need to take a taxi regardless of where you stay.

Will you have time to enjoy the city at all on your day of arrival OR are you getting into town late in the day and this is more of a 'sleeping nearby to make sure i don't miss the boat' type of stay?

Do you have any requirements for this stay (other than star rating and budget)... do you need to be near a tourist area, beach, etc?

Thank you ~ That is why I LOVE this board!  Everyone is so helpful!!  Our flight is a red-eye and gets in, I believe, at 2:45am.  Soooo, after we wake up we will have the rest of the day to have some fun.  Not exactly sure what that means, but I do hear that there is plenty to do/see in Puerto Rico.  Since it sounds like staying 'near' the pier isn't super important, do you have a preferred neighborhood?  I would LOVE to be on/near the beach for sure.

The two main zones to bid on in this region are the 'Old San Juan-Condado' zone and the 'Ocean Park-Isla Verde' zone. The Old San Juan is more of the touristy area (although Condado isn't necessarily so)... the Isla Verde is more of the beach area.

Have you cruised before... as usually embarkation day most try to get to the pier early and get on the ship, it's typically not much of a day to explore the area... especially given how late you get into the area.

Just to prevent some future confusion - my calendar has the second Friday in October as the 10th?  With your 2:45am arrival, your plane schedule probably does say Oct 11, but that would be Saturday.

In my case, a very MANY years ago I wouldn't have considered this to be a problem.

Breakfast somewhere, hunt for a beach view in the dark, watch the sun rise, watch some cruise ships come in, check out El Morro, ferry to visit Bacardi's, walk and gawk, shop, leisurely Spanish lunch outdoors, walk the beach....

Nap on the beach.  Get a sunburn.

Maybe even rent a car and go snorkeling or visit the rain forest.

Nowadays, I'd get a room for two nights.

  • 2 weeks later...

Good morning :)

You are all always so helpful ~ thank you!!

I see on Priceline.Express a  4* hotel, for $121 per night, that lists the following amenities in Old San Juan - Condado

Internet

Indoor or Outdoor Pool

Restaurant

Business Center

Casino

Fitness Center

Do any of you have a suggestion of what this hotel most likely is?

So if you get in Friday morning at 3am what do you intend to do between then and check-in time at the hotel (which may not officially be until 2pm-4pm in the afternoon)?

???

My guess would be the La Concha, a Renaissance Resort... but with so few amenities it could be something different.

I also see, on HOTWIRE another 4* option for close to the same price ($129) that says it is in the Condado Area..... Possibly the same hotel?

Casino

Spa Services

Business Center

Self Serve Laundry

Tennis Nearby

I'm not currently seeing this offer... are you still seeing this on your own HOTWIRE search? (one nite, Oct 10, correct?) Are you searching for more than one room or something other than the default 2adults/0children?

We are looking at a different flight, that gets in at about 9am .... that will make it MUCH easier to play until check-in time.

For that Hot.wire Search I did do 3 rooms, 6 people.... which is now the accurate count.

It may be better to book each room separately though.  If I do one room/2 people then I get a 4* for $119 (originally $184) with the following:

Internet

Fitness Center

Self Serve Laundry

Near Beach

Pool

Oceanfront Hotel

Restaurant

Casino

Business Center

What do you think????

I need to ask before we move on, would you like the complete party to stay at the same hotel? Or would you be OK if the others got a different hotel?

If you would like that all 6 stay at the same hotel wouldn't I book each room separately.

Let us know and we'll go from there.

Please use the BiddingHelper.com EASY VIEW for your searches to ensure you're seeing the complete list of amenities associated with the property, as i believe there are more than what you have posted above.

Agreed... what if you purchase one nite and then the same hotel does not appear for future searches? (which may be likely in this scenario since the same hotel is not appearing when searching for 1room vs. 3rooms)

Thank you ~ Yes, I agree, could be risky booking the rooms separately so I will be booking all 3 rooms at the same time.

With that in mind, and using the 'BiddingHelper.com', these are the amenities I see for the 4* room in Condado neighborhood at $129/night:

Casino, Business Center, Self service laundry, Tennis Nearby, Spa Services, Accessible for the blind, Accessible for the deaf, Accessible path of travel, In-room accessibility, Accessible bathroom, Handicapped parking, Roll-in shower

Thanks again!!!

I'm not 100% certain, but the Condado Plaza Hilton would be my best guess for this (and a less likely, but distant secondary guess of the Marriott San Juan Resort and Stellaris Casino).

One other option is on PRICELINE EXPRESS is a 4* hotel in the Old San Juan - Condado zone with:

Free Internet in room

Outdoor Pool

Restaurant

Business Center

Casino

Fitness Center

(a guess would be the La Concha, a Renaissance Resort or the Marriott San Juan Resort and Stellaris Casino)

Price of this one would is $121/nite, but (expiring tonite) is a link in my signature for an extra 10% OFF which would bring the room rate down to $109/nite.

Fantastic!!  I just looked up both hotels that you 'guess' are winners on Priceline and on Hotwire and they both look like winners.  I will be purchasing tonight, using your links for sure, and will let you know which one we went for and if it was indeed the hotel that you think it is.  Curious ~ I haven't had you guess wrong yet, has it happened?  :)
