Priceline Hotel: 3* New York City (Chelsea) Gem Hotel - Chelsea, an Ascend Collection Hotel

Have been searching for the past week for 5/16-5/18 and couldn't find anything from $200-250 in the Chelsea/Soho/MSG area. I started looking at 4* and 3.5* but nothing. Ended up with a 3* at $280 a night!! Reading reviews on this hotel and the consensus is that it is really small...

 

Any tips for future bookings? Should I have booked it sooner?

Sorry to see that you couldn't get a better deal. I don't know why you had to pay this high rate. I'm a believer in booking when plans are firm. I only wait to the last minute if I know the area well and I believe there will be a different inventory or a lower price. But you need to have done your homework if going that route.
