chintrin Posted May 4, 2014 Report Posted May 4, 2014 Hi Everyone, First post, great information I've read on the board so far. Family of 5 (young kids) looking to travel July 20-25 to explore NYC for the first time. Price and convenience are equally important. From my research I'm comfortable with $100 max. bid price for 2.5* and up anywhere from UWS and UES all the way south the DT, alternatively in LIC and Brooklyn. Close proximity to transit is important. Free parking/internet/breakfast is preferable. What should my strategy be? When should I bid - now or closer to travel date? What day of the week? Cheapest I've found so far is 2* LIC hotel for $104 on Priceline.Express and 2.5* LIC hotel for $89 on Hot.wire. Your help is appreciated!
yellowdog Posted May 4, 2014 Report Posted May 4, 2014 Welcome to BetterBidding! Please note that PRICELINE and PRICELINE EXPRESS only guarantees double occupancy, after that is at the discretion of the hotel. While you can call the hotel you win and request a room with two beds, the hotel may not be able, or willing, to honor your request. Whether they will/can or not depends upon a LOT of different factors, including what is available at the time of your check-in, how many rooms with two beds are offered at the hotel and what they need to accommodate other guests for your dates, hotel policy etc.HOTWIRE guarantees sleeping accommodations for everyone you include in your search... this often means two beds in the room, but the second 'bed' could be a pullout sofabed, rollaway brought into the room, etc. You're looking for two rooms? NYC is famous for small rooms and we never advise our members to "take a chance" in this city. When should I bid - now or closer to travel date? What day of the week? There is no best time or day to score the best PRICELINE deals. Your dates will be busy and hot for NYC so there's no need to wait with the bidding.Let us know your thoughts and we'll go from there. Please use the PRICELINE and HOTWIRE links on the board to begin your purchases and searches.Yellowdog.
chintrin Posted May 5, 2014 Author Report Posted May 5, 2014 Thanks for letting me know about the occupancy guarantee. Looking for just one room. I'm trying both Priceline and Hotwire. If I get the better deal on Priceline then I'll take that chance on the occupancy. If I get something on the island, that convenience outweighs the risk of sleeping on the floor! What should my strategy be?
thereuare Posted May 5, 2014 Report Posted May 5, 2014 If I get the better deal on Priceline then I'll take that chance on the occupancy. To be clear, you're going to be taking a chance on occupancy no matter which service you use, as PRICELINE only guarantees double occupancy, HOTWIRE up to quad occupancy (if you include 4 people in your search)... with 5 people you'll be over the official limit regardless of which service you use. What should my strategy be?I wouldn't bid on PRICELINE in NYC with 5 people (possibly in Orlando, but not NYC)... but it's your trip, so let us know which zones, by PRICELINE name, you'd like to include in your first round of bidding and we'll suggest a strategy for you to follow. (ie- not sure if you want to only include Manhattan zones only at first OR include LIC and/or Brooklyn in your initial bidding... also, remember that you can land a hotel anywhere in the zone(s) you select) Please use the PRICELINE and HOTWIRE links on the board to begin your travel purchases. chintrin Posted May 13, 2014 Author Report Posted May 13, 2014 No luck yet. I've tried including LIC as well. I'll keep trying the same strategy hoping I'll get something soon. Sounds good?
thereuare Posted May 13, 2014 Report Posted May 13, 2014 I'm not a big fan of LIC, but if/when you do add this zone, i would increase your star rating. You can also sign up for alerts from our sister site RateDrop for any hotels in the zone/star rating combination you'd like so that if anything does drop below $100/nite you'll be alerted to it. chintrin Posted May 14, 2014 Author Report Posted May 14, 2014 Why would you not prefer LIC? Is it the lack of manhattan feel? Thanks for the RateDrop link. I found a 2.5* LIC for $86. Would this be the best western plaza?
thereuare Posted May 14, 2014 Report Posted May 14, 2014 Why would you not prefer LIC?The area is changing (for the better) but is still not 'there' yet, imo. It just doesn't feel 'clean' to me... scrap metal places, graffiti, etc. Thanks for the RateDrop link. I found a 2.5* LIC for $86. Would this be the best western plaza? We would need more details... thru PRICELINE EXPRESS or HOTWIRE? What are the full details (including amenities) associated with the offer?
