dc2r Posted April 28, 2014 Report Posted April 28, 2014 Hey Guys, Back again. Just wondering what is the best recommended approach for 7 people. 5 adults and 2 children. I've heard staying in Jersey is the cheapest approach. Just trying to plan ahead as much as I can. I don't have to stay in the city of course. But want the transit commute to not be too far too commute into the Big Apple to site see and attractions. Thanks in advance.
thereuare Posted April 28, 2014 Report Posted April 28, 2014 Were you looking for 2 or 3rooms for the group? Any idea of expected budget at this point in time? dc2r Posted April 29, 2014 Author Report Posted April 29, 2014 perhaps 2 rooms. as that might be the cheaper option i would assume. but if 3 rooms works better at price then that would be better. terms of budget i'm not even sure what i'm expecting to pay. if its like anything like my chicago hyatt stay then that's not bad. i'll have to look at the rate again, only portion that sucked was the parking per day was almost half the room. i think it was 80 per night.
AaronJB Posted April 29, 2014 Report Posted April 29, 2014 NYC is more expensive than Chicago, unfortunately - I'd expect a 4* in Midtown is likely going to cost around $120-135, depending on the particular zone. A 4* in Jersey City is probably going to be fairly similar - given the difference, I'd just stay in the city. Just to confirm, are you driving? Thank you for using the board's HOTWIRE or PRICELINE links to start your purchases and searches.
dc2r Posted April 29, 2014 Author Report Posted April 29, 2014 yes i will be driving, we are debating about driving two cars or renting a van. seems like renting a van is going to cost more then driving two cars. but i'm also under the impression that parking may be expensive as well
AaronJB Posted April 29, 2014 Report Posted April 29, 2014 Parking is going to be expensive in Jersey City ($25-30 per day, probably), but definitely more expensive in NYC. Thank you for using the board's HOTWIRE or PRICELINE links to start your purchases and searches.
thereuare Posted April 30, 2014 Report Posted April 30, 2014 You could also park near a train or PATH station where you can leave your car(s) for the length of your stay, then take the train into the city for the duration of your stay, only returning to your vehicle when it's time to head back home. Parking near a PATH train would still require paid parking, but it would be less expensive than NYC... but when it's all said and done may not be worth the savings. From where are you traveling from? dc2r Posted April 30, 2014 Author Report Posted April 30, 2014 i will be travelling from Toronto, Ontario. would Newark be a bit cheaper? Suites as an option?
AaronJB Posted April 30, 2014 Report Posted April 30, 2014 Newark is generally cheaper/moderately cheaper but it becomes a matter of whether the difference between staying inside/outside the city is worthwhile given the travel and transit cost, not to mention convenience. Suites are not seen that often in the area, but I would look into Hot.wire to see if any listings are showing with a suite amenity. Thank you for using the board's HOTWIRE or PRICELINE links to start your purchases and searches.
thereuare Posted May 1, 2014 Report Posted May 1, 2014 I don't recommend Newark Airport as a viable NYC substitute... most hotels are not convenient to inexpensive mass transit, which means you'll either need to pay substantial for mass transit (which would be better spent for a more convenient hotel room), drive and pay for parking (either in NYC itself or near a PATH train), and the commute will take awhile (figure an hour plus if mass transit... if driving it all depends upon traffic, but a major artery connecting Newark and NYC is currently closed for the next 2 years) It will ultimately come down to a trade-off between budget vs. convenience. I think your first step should be do determine what hotels in the area cost for your dates (and to house all 7 guests), then determine your PRICELINE / HOTWIRE budget and how much convenience you're willing to give up to save money (or how much money you're willing to pay for convenience) Please use the PRICELINE and HOTWIRE links on the board to begin your travel purchases. dc2r Posted May 12, 2014 Author Report Posted May 12, 2014 fair enough. I prefer the budget over convenience as i can splurge more when it comes to entertainment. i'll do some quick PRICELINE quotes to see what the ball park is currently.

dc2r Posted May 23, 2014 Author Report Posted May 23, 2014 So i did a search in jersey city, NJ cheapest is The Holland Hotel @ $169/night and then Candlewood Suites @ $186/night Time Square cheapest is Mayfair @ $194/night Night Hotel @ $225/night just to get an idea, please note prices are in CDN dollars. Also, i would probably have to take into account parking in Time Square.
thereuare Posted May 23, 2014 Report Posted May 23, 2014 just to get an idea, please note prices are in CDN dollars. Please post to the board in US Dollars so that there is consistency throughout and rates are not subject to currency fluctuations when they are used for comparison purposes in the future. Are you ready to move forward and commit to a hotel for this trip? Are you still looking for 5adults/2children and what would be your target budget per nite (in US Dollars before taxes/fees)? dc2r Posted May 23, 2014 Author Report Posted May 23, 2014 wow. price is definitely up there. was really trying to lean towards under 120 with tax but that look like it might not work. and yes, the room accommodation of occupants are still the same.
thereuare Posted May 23, 2014 Report Posted May 23, 2014 Your budget is not realistic for something inside of Manhattan. Is SPLITTING YOUR PRICELINE BID an option? How do you want to proceed? dc2r Posted May 24, 2014 Author Report Posted May 24, 2014 i do agree with staying in manhattan for my budget will not work. will staying in jersey city and taking the train across a feasible option? if i split the decision i can potentially be in two different places then no?
AaronJB Posted May 24, 2014 Report Posted May 24, 2014 Unfortunately, I still think Jersey City is going to be tough for these date/s. I'm seeing a 3* Hot.wire listing in Jersey City for these date/s for $220, there is no 4*. When looking at only the first couple of days, there's only a 2* for $219. Thank you for using the board's HOTWIRE or PRICELINE links to start your purchases and searches.
dc2r Posted May 25, 2014 Author Report Posted May 25, 2014 Maybe I should HOTWIRE instead and just pray we get the same location How about getting one hit and calling them up and asking them of they would give is another room at the same rate without the middle man?
AaronJB Posted May 25, 2014 Report Posted May 25, 2014 It's very unlikely the hotel will say yes. I've seen people be denied when asking that in-person at check-in and other users have reported similar results. Additionally, are you seeing anything on HOTWIRE in the desired areas within your budget? Thank you for using the board's HOTWIRE or PRICELINE links to start your purchases and searches.
