kev1 Posted April 27, 2014 Report Posted April 27, 2014 Hi, I been looking through your forum, it looks great! I have left this a little late as me and my wife are travelling over to the US end of July. We are planning on doing a fly and drive and I know some dates where we want some clean and decent accommodation where its safe and good to do the standard tourist stuff as a couple lol. We would be happy with 3.5 stars plus but as I had to spend a lot of my budget on the flights and its peak time but wasnt sure what areas to stay, what price to start bids etc. My budget would be around $100 -120 per night if that's realistic for what I am asking for? Anything below would be bonus but understand if I have got my approx budgets wrong, just let me know and I can consider. Basically I started looking at LA and like the sound of Hollywood area, then west Hol and then Downtown. But the others dont appeal as much. I would only need stay in LA between 29th to 31st July. The end of my trip will be in NYC - I haven't research anything yet so would be grateful for any recommendations on areas to consider and as this would be the end of our trip would be nice to have a relativly nice hotel. Dates for NYC are 14th to 19th Aug. Thank you very much in advance for all your help. Best Wishes, Kev
AaronJB Posted April 27, 2014 Report Posted April 27, 2014 Welcome to Betterbidding. :)We'll use this thread for the NYC stay; please start a new thread in the California forum for the LA portion of your stay. In terms of NYC, what would be your desired budget per night/star rating? Also, let us know if you have questions about destinations in-between if you are driving. Amtrak also has rail passes, as well. Thank you for using the board's HOTWIRE or PRICELINE links to start your purchases and searches.
kev1 Posted April 28, 2014 Author Report Posted April 28, 2014 Thanks Aaron. For NYC we would probably be looking around $120 to $140. Do you think 4 star would be possible? If not we would have to settle for 3.5 stars please. I will be driving around the West Coast and when I fly into JFK will just be using public transport for the 4 nights in NYC before flying off back from NYC. We would be staying between 15th Aug and looking to check out on 19th Aug. Many thanks again for your help and advice. Kev
thereuare Posted April 28, 2014 Report Posted April 28, 2014 Depending upon the zones you choose, $140 for a 4* hotel may be possible. Here are some comments on NYC zones... At the 4* level, MTE, MTW, TS, CPS, MSG, ESB, Chelsea are the most frequently bid zones, but there are some caveats to be aware of which may have you want to include/exclude some zones: MTE - most 4* hotels are well located and within a 10 minute walk to the subway, but a few can be up to a 15 minute walk CPS - has the Hudson Hotel, which while well located, has notoriously small rooms Chelsea - can be a 10+ minute walk to the subway, but is a 'hot' area right now with lots of clubs, cafes, bars, restaurants, boutiques, etc. so have to decide of this environment is worth the trade-off with the distance to the subway Based upon the above let us know which zone(s) you're willing to accept or feel free to ask questions and we'll take it from there. kev1 Posted April 28, 2014 Author Report Posted April 28, 2014 Thank you for your reply. We want to see all the tourist attractions and be around a safe area also. I don't really mind a little walking. Do not like the sound of the Hudson unfortunately however Chelsea/MTE/MTW/CPS sounds good I would consider the others too but from what I read TS has mixed reviews so the only one unsure on. Thanks again Kev
thereuare Posted April 28, 2014 Report Posted April 28, 2014 My thoughts on Times Square... It's crowded, but if you want to avoid the crowds, it's easy enough to head down the first cross street (those running east/west and get away from the crowded streets). I wouldn't have any issue staying in Times Square, but there is no reason to only target this area either (like so many users who we hear 'only want to stay in Times Square' as they think they need to in order to in order to be centrally located, but in reality any location in midtown near a major subway station (preferably a few subway options) will have you centrally located enough). As well, the area has gotten a little better in terms of crowds since they shut down the street and made it into an outdoor promenade, as all the people that used to be on the sidewalk now have a bit more room since they have the street to walk in now too. kev1 Posted April 29, 2014 Author Report Posted April 29, 2014 I think thats a valid point. On that note I would be happy to include TS as well. I think your are 100% right the main feature would be having the subway accessible, I dont mind walking 10 mins or so to the subways etc.., quiet enjoy it as it will be summer - as long as its safe and not too much hassle. This is the end of my trip so will likely be broke and shattered so would be nice to have a nice hotel to return after a long days sight seeing :)
thereuare Posted April 29, 2014 Report Posted April 29, 2014 So to confirm... all of the following are acceptable: MTE, MTW, TS, MSG, ESB, Chelsea Please confirm and we'll suggest a strategy for you to follow.
