ahh27 Posted April 22, 2014 Report Posted April 22, 2014 Hi, I'm coming to NYC from 28 May to 2 June, hoping to stay 4* in any of the following areas: Central Park South, Chelsea Area, Downtown, Empire State Building Area, Hell's Kitchen, Lower East Side, Madison Square Garden, Midtown East, Midtown West, SoHo - Tribeca, Times Square, Upper East Side, & Upper West Side Is a maximum budget of $210 (including taxes) per night wildly unrealistic? Any tips greatly appreciated!
thereuare Posted April 22, 2014 Report Posted April 22, 2014 Welcome to BetterBidding! Please post your budget in terms of room rate per nite as it makes it easier to equate to the current offers and also avoids any confusion as to exactly how much you're willing to bid. As far as your budget, you're in the right ballpark as PRICELINE EXPRESS has: 4* MTE for $180/nite ($218/nite all-in) Pets Allowed Restaurant Business Center Fitness Center ... best guess for this property would be the Intercontinental The Barclay Do you want to take this offer or bid on the zones above on PRICELINE? If moving forward bidding, note the following: CPS - had the Hudson Hotel which is well located but notoriously small rooms MTE - a few of the hotels can be up to a 15 minute walk to the subway Chelsea - can be 10+ minute walk to the subway but a 'hot' area right now with lots of boutiques, cafes, restaurants, etc. so even if not the most convenient still a popular zone to include UES, UWS, DT - all do-able at the right price, but not as convenient as the other midtown locations If you decide to bid, please confirm which zones you want to include as well as your maximum bid price. ahh27 Posted April 23, 2014 Author Report Posted April 23, 2014 Thanks so much for your help, that's fantastic. Assuming that my leave from work over those dates is confirmed, I think I'll go ahead and try to bid on Priceline (usually cheaper than Hotwire, yes?) - the Intercontinental The Barclay looks lovely but I'll try my luck bidding. I'll be spending most of my time up at Columbia Medical School in Washington Heights but want to stay somewhere more central for days when I'm not in class. I've been to NYC many times already so exact location isn't an issue - I won't be doing the classic tourist things and hanging out in Times Square, and a 10-15 min walk to the subway doesn't bother me. Maximum budget will be $180 per room, per night, pre-tax. Again, your help is appreciated. If you have any further tips, they'll be gratefully received.
thereuare Posted April 23, 2014 Report Posted April 23, 2014 Let us know once your leave from work is approved and we'll have a look at current rates for these dates at that time... not sure how long your approval will take, but a lot can change with hotel inventory/pricing in a short period of time. ahh27 Posted April 25, 2014 Author Report Posted April 25, 2014 Thank you very much for your detailed advice! Just one more question: is it more strategic to start placing bids early- or mid-week, rather than Friday/weekends, when all travel costs tend to go up? I usually buy flights on a Tuesday or Wednesday to get cheapest offers, and hotels booked conventionally are almost always cheaper if you make your purchase mid-week rather than over the weekend, when demand is highest. Does the same apply to bidding on Priceline? With thanks again!
thereuare Posted April 25, 2014 Report Posted April 25, 2014 There is no benefit as to what day of the week or what time of the day you place your bid (nor do i find there is currently any day of the week benefit in when to purchase airfare or hotel rooms thru direct methods... this may have held true for airfare years ago, but as technology has progressed the pricing models have gotten so sophisticated that i find the old school 'days of the week' theories don't hold true anymore).
