rldifrancesco Posted February 20, 2014 Report Posted February 20, 2014 Looking for the best price I can do for a 3.5-4.5 star in NYC April 10-16. Is it realistic to think we could get something for $150 per night? Could possibly go as high as $200 per night all in (if the difference in hotel and location would be worth it), but would love to stay at or below $150. Acceptable zones are Central Park SouthChelsea AreaEmpire State Building AreaHell's KitchenMadison Square Garden - Convention AreaMidtown EastMidtown WestTimes Square Let me know what the best bang for my buck and strategy would be. Thanks!
thereuare Posted February 21, 2014 Report Posted February 21, 2014 Welcome to BetterBidding! Are you willing to pay more for a 4* vs. a 3.5* OR is the goal the least expensive 3.5* or better for this trip? Also, note tha the CPS zone has the Hudson Hotel, which while well located, has notoriously small rooms... would this be acceptable? Please use the PRICELINE and HOTWIRE links on the board to begin your travel purchases... and please click each of these previous links before replying. Let us know the information above and we'll advise accordingly. Please use this HOTWIRE and these PRICELINE LINKS: HOTELS, CAR RENTALS, and AIRFARE to begin your travel purchases
rldifrancesco Posted February 21, 2014 Author Report Posted February 21, 2014 My goal is the best bang for my buck. If advice is that paying more for a 4* is worth an extra money, I'm game. If it's going to be significantly more money for little reward, I'd go for the cheaper room. I care more about location than room size, so I'm ok with the Hudson Hotel.
thereuare Posted February 21, 2014 Report Posted February 21, 2014 This is peak season in NYC and at currennt rates I don't think $150 all-in is realistic for these dates. The strateg we suggest below starts lower (just in case there is any low-hanging fruit) and goes up to a $170/nite bid price for a 4* hotel... if that is rejected we'll have a further discussion about increaseing your bid price or lowering your star rating to 3.5 stars. When bidding 4* in NYC you have TWO re-bid zones. If you're not familiar with re-bidding please read Priceline Re-Bidding Explained and feel free to ask questions and/or confirm your re-bid zones with the board before proceeding. rldifrancesco Posted March 3, 2014 Author Report Posted March 3, 2014 Finally finished the bidding process - no dice. I bid 175 in the final offer. Is it worth trying the same higher end bids over the next couple of days, or do I really need to change my price range or star level? Guidance on where to go from here would be helpful! Thanks
thereuare Posted March 3, 2014 Report Posted March 3, 2014 Did you only start today OR did you bid all of the above over the course of 10+ days? If you're not aware, you could make all of the bids above in one bidding session as each bid uses a unique zone combination and not a duplicate of any of the others. Nobody can say if rates will come down, or move higher, over the next few days/weeks, you do have a little time so you could try again if you wanted in 3-4 days to see if anything becomes available, but at the moment i'm guessing you're likely looking in the $185-$205 area for a 4* hotel one of the zones above... a 3.5* in the $165-$185 area. If you're willing to expand your zones to include Downtown you could likely get something in the $150-$170 area. Let us know your thoughts and we'll take it from there. rldifrancesco Posted March 3, 2014 Author Report Posted March 3, 2014 I did half of the bids last Friday, and half of them today. I know you can do them all in one day, but Priceline-ing in NYC isn't as fast as it used to be! I found I was waiting 5-10 minutes for my bid responses to be available, so I've been fitting bids in between work projects throughout the day. Do you think the $150-175 range for a 4* is true for SoHo/Tribeca as well, or do you have to go all the way into the Financial District for those rates? I used to live in NYC, but it’s been 10 years, and I was never very familiar with the downtown area (lived in Astoria and worked in Midtown). I’m just not as familiar/comfortable with the layout down there.
AaronJB Posted March 4, 2014 Report Posted March 4, 2014 $150-175 is worth trying in the Soho area, but I'd agree Midtown is probably going to take at least $185-205. Thank you for using the board's HOTWIRE or PRICELINE links to start your purchases and searches.
rldifrancesco Posted March 4, 2014 Author Report Posted March 4, 2014 Went up to $175 yesterday, including SoHo and Downtown. Still no win. I got a reply back saying I could re-bid at $193, but did not attempt at that price. Does that usually mean that's the lowest available price? Now debating on bidding higher, or looking for 3.5*. Is there a particular area that has better hotels in the 3.5* category?
thereuare Posted March 5, 2014 Report Posted March 5, 2014 Went up to $175 yesterday, including SoHo and Downtown. If downtown is an acceptable option at this price, PRICELINE EXPRESS has a 4* hotel in the Downtown zone (Free Internet available) for $184/nite, but using the discount link and code in my signature gives an extra 5% OFF, bringing this room rate down to $175/nite, the same amount you have bid above. thereuare Posted March 5, 2014 Report Posted March 5, 2014 It appears the offer may have changed as i'm now seeing a 4* hotel in this 167zone for $176/nite ($167 after the 5% discount) with: Free Internet in room Restaurant Business Center Fitness Center The Club Quarters, World Trade Center would be a guess for this current offer, but i'm far from certain. Theoretically if you were bidding on PRICELINE you were willing to accept any hotel in the zone at this star level, so the price of this one (even lower than you bid) should be appealing, even if the property can't be identified beforehand. If having more insight is important, since this an extended stay you could see if this same property is offered for the first (or last) nite of your stay and then again for the balance. If so, you could purchase the solo nite in order to 'look behind the curtain'. If you're happy with the results purchase the remaining nites, if not, make alternate plans for the balance of your stay. rldifrancesco Posted March 11, 2014 Author Report Posted March 11, 2014 Still trying. Can you give me your best guess on Hotwire 4*, ESB, $197, 85% Hotwire recommended (1,507 reviews), 4 out of 5 Trip Advisor, amenities: Free InternetPet FriendlyFitness CenterRestaurantBusiness CenterSelf Service Laundry
thereuare Posted March 11, 2014 Report Posted March 11, 2014 Please keep all posts for the same stay in the same thread. When you win a hotel use the REPLY and REPORT WIN button on the lower right corner of this page (only visible to the OP) and the thread will automatically be moved to the correct section of the board (if necessary). For the 4* ESB property above, I believe there are more amenities then what you have posted above as HOTWIRE has a new interface that does not show the complete set of amenities unless you click thru a few extra links. If you repeat your search using our BiddingHelper.com tool... use the HOTWIRE EASY VIEW tab and then click the GREEN BUTTON next to this listing, do you see more amenities then what you have listed above? When searching as per above this is the amenity set i'm seeing for this property: Free Internet Pet Friendly Fitness Restaurant Business Laundry Hi-Speed Internet If this is what you're seeing my best guess would be the St Giles The Court or the Carlton on Madison Avenue (the former is seen more frequently than the latter, but you should at least be prepared for either). Also, don't forget the link and discount code in my signature gives an additional 5% OFF express deals. Please use the PRICELINE and HOTWIRE links on the board to begin your travel purchases. rldifrancesco Posted March 19, 2014 Author Report Posted March 19, 2014 Secured a room on March 11 (sorry for the late response). Prices seem to have dropped a little since then (Hotwire has several Manhattan 4* options available for $200 or less), but glad to have a room booked none the less. Thanks for all of your help and tips!
