bar202 Posted January 14, 2014 Report Posted January 14, 2014 This is my first post, thanks for this amazing site. I am looking for a 3+ room for Jan 19 for 2 adults and 1 17-year old. I know that Priceline only quotes for double occupancy. Am I right to conclude that Priceline is out? If so, I'd like to stay for under $100, but I'm not super fussy about the location -- my family is looking at Columbia with our daughter on Monday. I'm thinking my best bet is to search Hotwire for the best rated, highest amenity hotel at the cheapest price and not to worry too much about the location. We are not smokers, am I right that to get a Hotwire room for nonsmokers, I need to be in a nonsmoking hotel? If there's a way I could use Priceline, without having to get two rooms, I would love to know it. Thanks in advance!
yellowdog Posted January 14, 2014 Report Posted January 14, 2014 Welcome to BetterBidding :) Am I right to conclude that Priceline is out?NYC is one of the cities that we don't recommed our members to take a chance if you really need two beds. PRICELINE only guarantees double occupancy, after that is at the discretion of the hotel. While you can call the hotel you win and request a room with two beds, the hotel may not be able, or willing, to honor your request. Whether they will/can or not depends upon a LOT of different factors, including what is available at the time of your check-in, how many rooms with two beds are offered at the hotel and what they need to accommodate other guests for your dates, hotel policy etc.We are not smokers, am I right that to get a Hotwire room for nonsmokers, I need to be in a nonsmoking hotel? Most hotels are smokfree today with a few exceptions. HOTWIRE also got a smokefree amenity so you know that the room you'll get will be smokefree.I hope this answers your questions?Let us know your thoughts and we'll go from there. Please use the PRICELINE and HOTWIRE links on the board to begin your purchases and searches.Yellowdog.
rr809 Posted January 14, 2014 Report Posted January 14, 2014 Yellowdog, I thought you might say that, so Hotwire it is. I guess the game is now to try to find the best hotel at the best price. For that I use the hotel lists and try to match amenities? Do I have that right? I will use the site links and post my results. Please let me know if there is anything else that you would recommend.

bar202 Posted January 16, 2014 Author Report Posted January 16, 2014 Woops, I just realized that, in addition to the hotel price and the taxes (roughly 15%), I'm also looking at something like $60 to park the car all day Sunday and Monday morning. Is this just an accepted part of visiting NYC? How do people handle this? Thanks again!
AaronJB Posted January 16, 2014 Report Posted January 16, 2014 Unfortunately, that is an issue in multiple major cities. $50-60 is not uncommon in Chicago, as well and the price (remarkably) seems to keep edging up.Thank you for using the board's HOTWIRE or PRICELINE links to start your purchases and searches..
thereuare Posted January 16, 2014 Report Posted January 16, 2014 I'm also looking at something like $60 to park the car all day Sunday and Monday morning. You park the car separate from the hotel... depending upon where you are ultimately located, you can usually find cheaper parking ($25-$35/day) if you use a garage that is not affiliate with the hotel. For longer stays you have the option of leaving the car outside of the city (like near a train station) and commuting in via train for the last mile(s) of your trip, but for a short trip like this the savings aren't worth it relative to the added expense of mass transit into the city. Please use the PRICELINE and HOTWIRE links on the board to begin your travel purchases.Let us know what you decide and how it goes or if we can be of further help.
