I have only been to San Francisco one time and am taking my wife for her first time. We are not too familiar with the areas and are looking for advice. We would like to stay somewhere near public transport since we will not have a car in a nicer area. Which are would be the best and what would be the best way to book? We are looking for a 3 to 4 star for around $100 or less if possible. Thanks for any help.

Welcome to BetterBidding!

Union Square East and Union Square West are two of the most popular zones at the 4* level, but at less than 4* some hotels in the USW zone are near the tenderloin district where there are a fair number of homeless people that may beg/ask for change. I know of no safety incidents, but some don't like the USW zone at 3.5* or under due to this, but how much of an issue this represents likely has a lot to do with where you're from and how much homelessness/begging you see in your own home town.

The Financial District is popular as well as it is close to USE and USW but often a little cheaper, and Fisherman's Wharf is also popular but a little too touristy for some.

I'll add that depending upon the zone(s) you choose your budget is probably inline for a 3.5* hotel, but a 4* hotel will likely cost you more in the $125-$145 range.
