Questor Posted November 27, 2013 Report Posted November 27, 2013 Hi all,My wife and I are returning to New York after an 8 year hiatus next May, and the last few times we have visited (always in winter) have used Priceline with great success, although usually closer to arrival.Would now be a reasonable time to look for hotels given that we are still 6 months away?We would prefer to stay south of 42nd St if possible, but aren't too fussy as we know that transportation is good. We also aren't too worried about lots of amenities, so wouldn't be looking for 4* accomodations (although if they were cheap we wouldn't say no!)Anyone have any advice other than to keep an eye out? We would ideally like less than $200 a night although we realise this may be a pipe dream. Thanks
thereuare Posted November 27, 2013 Report Posted November 27, 2013 Welcome to BetterBidding! As you may be aware, this is typically an expensive time of year in NYC. Nobody can say if prices will drop, or move even higher, between now and your trip, but since you mention that $200 may be a 'pipe dream' (i don't think it's that out of the question) why not start the bidding now up to this amount (or a price near it) and if successful you'll feel that you have received a good deal for this trip by planning early.Currently HOTWIRE has a 4* hotel in the Chelsea zone for $189 which i'm guessing to be the Doubletree Chelsea... would this work for your plans? There are other properties located in Midtown on both HOTWIRE and PRICELINE EXPRESS at just over the $200 mark, so your budget isn't unreasonable at current rates.Let us know if you are interested in the HOTWIRE Chelsea property (we'll provided the amenities we're currently seeing associated with this offer) OR if you want to try bidding on PRICELINE let us know which zones (by PRICELINE name) you're willing to accept, as well as your maximum bid, and we will suggest a strategy for you to follow. Please use the PRICELINE and HOTWIRE links on the board to begin your travel purchases. Questor Posted November 28, 2013 Author Report Posted November 28, 2013 The hotel in Chelsea does look good.. if I were to go Priceline Iwould happily go for:Chelsea, ESB area, Hell's Kitchen, MSG/Convention, Midtown East, Midtown West, SoHo-Tribeca or Lower East Side - up to a maximum of $200 at this stage, but with a little flexibility.
thereuare Posted November 28, 2013 Report Posted November 28, 2013 ...up to a maximum of $200 at this stage...With the HOTWIRE Chelsea hotel acceptable and offered at $189/nite, why bid up to $200 on PRICELINE? You could just as easily receive the same hotel that is offered by HOTWIRE but pay too much for it... should we lower your maximum bid to $189?Please use the PRICELINE and HOTWIRE links on the board to begin your travel purchases. Questor Posted December 6, 2013 Author Report Posted December 6, 2013 We did end up going for the Hotwire property at $189 which was the Doubletree Chelsea - I am sure we possibly could have gotten cheaper, but the location is right and it's still not too expensive for NY at that time of year.Booked of course via the HOTWIRE linksThanks again - will be asking for advice on Washington next....!
thereuare Posted December 6, 2013 Report Posted December 6, 2013 Congratulations on your success! Nicely done!
