Hi!

First time poster here, so apologies if I don't do it right.

My partner and I are looking at staying in NYC from 4/18/14 to 4/24/14 (6 nights). 2 adults, 1 room. 4* or higher, as per the boards suggestion.

We wish to stay in Central Park South (CPS), Midtown West (MTW) or Times Square (TS). We could do Mid Town East (MTE) at a push, but would prefer the first three areas.

We started bidding and we were optimistic I know, but we have a bit of time so we started low :)

Anyways, all of our bids were rejected:

First try:

Bid#1 - $100/n, 4*+, TS - rejected

Bid#2 - $110/n, 4*+, TS,MTW - rejected

Bid#3 - $125/n, 4*+, TS,MTW,CPS - rejected

Bid#4 - $125/n, 4*+, TS,MTW,CPS,MTE - rejected

Second try:

Bid#5 - $135/n, 4*+, TS - rejected

Bid#6 - $140/n, 4*+, TS,MTW - rejected

Bid#7 - $145/n, 4*+, TS,MTW,CPS - rejected

Bid#8 - $145/n, 4*+, TS,MTW,CPS,MTE - rejected

This will be our first time to NYC, and this is our first time bidding for hotel accomodation.

Any suggestions for future bids, bidding experts? Thanks!!

Welcome to BetterBidding!

HOTWIRE currently has a 4* hotel offered in the Midtown Central zone (roughly their equivalent to MTW) for $167/nite with:

Free Internet

Pet Friendly

Boutique

Business

Hi-Speed Internet

These amenities are not that uncommon for NYC so it could be something else, but the Mansfield has previously been seen with this amenity set and that would be my best guess for this one... would this property be of interest to you? What would be your maximum bid of continuing with PRICELINE?

Thanks for the reply! We will definitely use the board links.

The Mansfield looks good and decent enough... will need to read a few reviews though.

Being inexperienced with what NYC has to offer, we have no requirements other than to get the cheapest possible 4*+ place in the areas I've stated previously. That said, I don't think we would look at higher than $200 a night.

Next night's bids:

Bid#9: $150/n, 4*+, TS - rejected

Bid#10: $155/n, 4*+, TS,MTW - rejected

Bid#11: $160/n, 4*+, TS,MTW,CPS - rejected

Bid#12: $165/n, 4*+, TS - rejected

Bid#13: $167/n, 4*+, TS,MTW - rejected

Bid#14: $167/n, 4*+, TS,MTW,CPS - rejected

We stopped at $167/night because we knew we could get the Hotwire Midtown Central hotel for $167/night (likely Mansfield or Shoreham). (bonus q: how long do these offers last? I'm thinking it varies...)

Now we don't know what to do.

Is it worth continuing bidding around the $167/night mark over the next couple of weeks, or are things unlikely to change on Priceline (ie should we just take the Hotwire deal)?

Cheers

Hotels change their rates constantly based upon room inventory levels (ie- new reservations/cancellations that come in) so the current offers could remain the same for days, weeks or months... or they could disappear entirely in just a few hours.

Nobody can say if rates will come down, or move higher, between now and your stay, but if you look at the 4* hotels offered on HOTWIRE the next lowest price is over $215/nite, so if all else remains the same except this current 4* MTC property should disappear, that is the next likely price point you're looking at.

So in summary you do indeed have a lot of time before your stay, but this also seems to be a very nice rate for a 4* hotel for this time of year.

Thanks for the advice.

It turns out that when we went to the website of the most likely hotel (Mansfield), the rate that HOTWIRE is giving us (as a special), seems to be the normal price for a room there. (Hotwire gives - $1291, hotel website is $1288)

So we won't be signing up just yet - we'll keep on bidding on PRICELINE until we get an actual deal methinks :)

I think you do have a good amount of time to wait. You could lock a refundable deal in now as an acceptable rate and then wait to see if better deals appear between now and your stay.
