I am taking my friend to NYC for his first time, and would like to stay in a reasonably "nice" hotel for two people and five nights. Check-in would be November 16th and check-out would be on Thursday the 21st. My ideal is a 4* hotel for under $210 (price without tax, for total w/tax & fees of no more than $1,300 as an absolute maximum). If that is not feasible a 3.5* or 3* in a nice area is acceptable.We will not have a car so areas I would prefer areas with a history or hotels near (10min walking) subway stations. Without knowing the subway situation for myself, the areas I am most keen on are: Empire State, Hell's Kitchen, Central Park South, Madison Square Garden, Midtown East, Midtown West, Times Square, Upper East Side, or Upper West Side. If any of these are typically unsafe/inconvenient/lower quality please let me know!If there is a Hotwire or Priceline Express deal that looks reasonable, I am open to that too, though in those cases I would prefer that the hotel amenities include free internet (not a requirement, just a wish-list). Please let me know if anyone has any suggestions.

I noticed the Affinia Manhattan is in the same area, and I would be happy with either (or many of the other 4* in MSG), so maybe I will get lucky. Is it considered best practice to start at $180 or a bit lower?
